His father was retired and his younger siblings needâ€" ed support, something he could hardly provide on his salary as an assistant proâ€" fessor in India. He was only one month into his marriage with Nirmal, but he had heard tales of teacher shortage in this country and offers of handsome sums from Ontario school boards for good teachers. So he came ahead, arriving in Montreal in the dead of night in the middle of January and one of the worst snow storms of the year. No overcoat. No boots. Without a worry in the world. (One simply had to point out here that Anand had not really done his homework.) He had no job lined up; in fact, he didn‘t know a living soul in Montreal, which hardly matâ€" tered because he didn‘t know how to use the telephone. Someone told him to drop a ‘dime‘ into the slot. What was a dime? His English was less than perfect. He had no inkling of dialectical phrases. . It‘s a long story. Too long for this space. Anand says he has always been lucky and this we believe. Though his luck may have something to do with hisâ€" faith in human nature, his resourcefulness and resilience â€" all admirable qualiâ€" His adventures in Canada began in earnest at Sir George Williams University where they offered him some lab work at $6/hour while he worked on his PhD. His love was physics and he was determined to teach at the univerâ€" sity level, even though there was better money to be had in the high schools. "It was one of those little ego things," he says now mischievously. But he soon relented when a real pay cheque beckoned to him from Geraldton, Ontario (north of Superior), where the shortage of teachers meant no teaching certificate was required. (One can hardly imagine a greater example of culture shock!) After a yearâ€"andâ€"aâ€"half, he moved on to Confederation College in Thunder Bay to appease his dignity. When he realized he was making $2,000 less than the local high school teachers, dignity became the lesser concern; he left to get his teaching certificate at Lakehead University. With his credentials in order finally, Anand found a job teaching high school in Toronto. This was 1972. While his first few years in education were very much driven by a combinaâ€" tion of ego and economic imperative, it soon became apparent to him that teaching was no ordinary job, and he was in it for the long haul. In terms of his own identity, he says this: "Community involvement is very important. It is one of the things that defines a person. We don‘t live in isolaâ€" tion. Our work, our community, the people around us, give us shape, status and position." Mohan is what his community says he is. As many people know, he ran for a position on the school board in the last municipal election, unsuccessfully; and éarlier this year, he missed a bid for the local, federal Liberal nomination. He was disappointed, naturally. But what concerns him more is the persistent notion that a visible minority "someone , who looks different" could never win an election here in Oakville. There is, no doubt, he would like to change that notion. $ Having said that, he maintains that whatever his political ambitions, they are separate from his feelings of community. At approximately 8 p.m. on Wednesday, a male employee of Pocket Press on Speers Road found another male attempting to steal a cash box from an office. Apparently he‘d entered through an unlocked door. Thieves ran when confronted Wouldâ€"be thieves left the scenes of their crimes empty handed in two sepâ€" arate incidents this week. The window on a rear door had been smashed and a man was discovâ€" ered entering the main golf range. When the two saw each other the culâ€" prit ran.
