For a second consecutive year, members of the Clarkson Christian Reformed Church - half of the membership is from Oakville as the church is on the Oakville-Mississauga border - have been heading out in teams of six to eight people, children to seniors, tackling community pro- jects. Last year, "we helped people in dire straits. Five of us went out with lawn mowers and 'whipper snappers' and mowed lawns, free. People were surprised to learn we were volunteer- ing our services, and we saw it as a positive. We do it to help people." The church sends out teams of vol- unteers for 'Serve Saturday' about three to four times a year, and would like to hear from individuals and groups requiring assistance. For infor- mation, call the church at 823-7262 and ask for John Van Sloten. Last Saturday. 65 people organized into 10 teams participated in a one- day community service blitz. Volunteers assisted at 10 projects - Oakville, Mississauga, and Toronto. explained Van Sloten. Other groups did maintenance work at the homes of an 81-year-old man and single mother in Mississauga, some of the volun- teers visited seniors in group homes, and one group assisted a Habitat for Humanity home building project in Toronto, explained Van Sloten. "Serve Saturdays is our way of helping others beyond putting money in the collection plate," said Van Sloten. adding the services are pro- vided at no charge. “It's helping with our hands and feet. When your help- ing people face to face, it can become more meaningful." "lt was one of our largest pro- jects," commented John Van Sloten, Serve Saturday co-ordinator for the Clarkson Christian Reformed Church. "And, all of our materials were donated." Aikenheads Hardware on Dundas Street near Hwy. 403 donated $400 worth of paint. brushes, garden tools and driveway sealer, and the Metro Toronto Zoo donated l2 admission passes to the Serve Saturday volunteers and group home residents.
