Pearson privatization deal criticism puts Mulvale on the spot By DIANE HART Special to the Beaver ~the controversial deal to privatize Pearson International Airport stirred up Oakville‘s first federâ€" . al election allâ€"candidates meeting, promoting PC candidate Ann Mulvale to urge people to wait until all the facts were in. She added at the close of the almost threeâ€"hour meeting that she would provide upâ€"toâ€"date information to people as soon as it was given to her. ‘‘There‘s a lot more about it. And when we get it, we‘ll give it to you," she said. Later, Mulvale said the deal had been discussed for the past three years and there was much more to the deal than had been reported that day. When the name of former MP Otto Jelinek was raised in the questions about the airport deal, Mulvale said she did not want to speak on his behalf. However, she said the infrastrucâ€" ture project would allow the Toronto airport to remain competitive in the international scene and that the jobs would start in November. Mulvale spent much of her time telling people to wait until all the facts were in. The mayor said she was in a regional council meeting that she couldn‘t leave and did not have all the information. Earlier this week, Liberal leader Jean Chretien blasted the Tories for trying to rush through the $700â€"milâ€" lion project on the eve of the election and called it "immoral" to do it so close to the election. "I don‘t answer for the former member of this riding," responded Mulvale. The allâ€"candidates meeting at Oakvilleâ€"Trafalgar High School was sponsored by FORG (Federation of Oakyville Ratepayers Groups). "I don‘t have all the facts to respond and I never respond to headâ€" lines in the paper," said Mulvale, when asked to comment on what one voter said was a blatant patronage deal by the Tories. "What‘s the rush? What is the urgency? Can it not wait another three weeks?" said one woman at the microâ€" phone. The Grade 10 student at White Oaks Secondary School was one of 60 students who tried out for the junior Wildcatsâ€"and one of 40 who made the team. She‘s the first girl to play high school in Oakville, although not the first in the Halton Board of Education (Lord Elgin and Aldershot previously had females). Gervais and the Wildcats lost 29â€"7 to Oakville Trafalgar, Wednesday. See story page 21. 75 Cents (GST included) (Photo by Peter McCusker)
