He had never heard of the Alzheimer's Disease that his wife suffered from. These are the horror-filled areas in which police officers work when they are attached to those units of police services dealing with elderly abuse, the theme of an all-day con- ference at the Oakville Centre last week. Acting Inspector Dan Okuloski of the Halton Regional Police Service, which sponsored the con- ference, talked about the challenges facing the Elder Abuse Advisory Committee, established to find methods of preventing and decreas- ing elder abuse cases. FEAR OF REPORTING One of the toughest obstacles it has pinpointed is the reluctance of people to report abuse when they come across it for fear of being sued in a civil suit if the instigator is not successfully prosecuted, he said. In all his experience, Okuloski could not recall this happening is celebrating the grand opening oi a new ottice in nundas at University Plaza 101 Osler Drive on Saturday, October 16th, 1993 Mt is celebrating a "One Day 8ale" With Holland America (Will-38 tire in all Mt tttflees! But this is only one reason why such crimes are "overlooked." Victims, themselves, don't want to accuse family members of any abuse they are suffering. These two groups T victims and public - have ready access to the Victim Services Unit of the police services which provides support and confr. dential advice in such cases. Where a possible crime is involved the police will "take information from you and get an information plan together. "We want to help people, not merely prosecute them," said Okuloski. "This community has always taken a proactive and pre- ventative approach to problems and the police need to be involved in the lives of seniors, not just put a stick- er on things that might be stolen." SCREEN CAREGIVERS Okuloski also pointed out to his audience that crimes are often per- petrated against the elderly by peo- ple who are supposed to be looking after them, often in institutions. For a minimal fee, the police provide a screening pre-hiring service. Many organizations have already taken advantage of this service, he said. Following Okuloski's presenta- tion, Det. Sgt. Bill Fleming described his 15 years of investigat- ing elder-related crime in M1004 MTN. 385-8500 STONEY CREEK 664-8000 BRANTFORD Wlir Lakehurst, NJ, and Acting Inspector Dan Okuloski of the Halton Regional Police Service share a common concern about elder abuse. He cited an elderly lady who, for three weeks, was harassed on the tele- phone by a woman insisting that her deceased husband had not paid a construction bill amounting to $20,000 and that this bill had been outstanding for some 15 years. The Because there is no universally- accepted definition of elder abuse, he said it is difncult to recognize it.
