JONES 338â€"8166 827â€"5584 SERV Paul Fray Phone 847â€"2468 SINCE NG DAKVILLE (Continued from page 1) church, so bring your cheque books.) While the GO Train executive has been painting since 1978, his miniaâ€" ture building phase (he calls it "a kind of 3â€"dimensional art") did not kick in until 1986, when he had the idea of making a model of the family cottage for his aging parents â€" as a surprise Christmas gift. "All I had was two photographs to work from, giving the front and side view," he explained in a recent interâ€" view. "But, of course, I knew it like the back of my hand from all the sumâ€" mers spent there growing up." There was much experimentation with tools and materials. He found an architectural plastics supplier in the telephone book and used many of the techniques he had learned in his youth as a model railroader to create trees from golden rod plants and grass from saw dust. The base was constructed of styrofoam and built up with Polyfilla. He brought an engineer‘s problem solving techniques to a personal test; a genuine labor of love. Unfortunately, Bill‘s mom passed away before he could finish. But the model was complete by Christmas that year and his dad was delighted, though he would point out (somewhat mischievously) one or two minor inaccuracies. The artist chuckled about that. He is glad to have such warm memories of his father who passed away in March of 1987. House models are something new The next project was the Severn Falls Train Station. The only hitch here was the standard old CPR station had been razed in 1970. Burns had but one photograph, though he managed to locate plans for part of the building. Besides, he said, "I could rememâ€" ber summers as a kid waiting on the platform for the ‘Bala Special‘ when my dad came up on Friday afternoon to spend the weekends with us." Burns said he "cobbled up" the staâ€" tion and showed it to a fellow, whose first job with the CPR had been at Severmn Falls. The old fellow claimed it was damâ€"nearâ€"perfect, except for the stove pipe at one end. "Never was there a stove at that end of the station," he said. When you ask Rurns what he enjoys most about his artistic pursuits, he finds it hard to answer. "I guess what I enjoy most is hearâ€" ing that people enjoy what I do," he said hesitantly. "I love to get a response. Art is fun. Whether it is model building or painting â€" that‘s how I measure (my success as an artist)." Bums added that he is anxious to spend more time this winter with his oils and his palette knife. Since the Bums family â€" wife Sue of some 24 years, teenage daughters Alissa and Leanne â€" moved to Oakville from Montreal in 1981, life has been relaâ€" tively hectic. "My job is pretty demanding and when we first moved in, the house needed a lot of work," the multiâ€"talâ€" ented Bums said. In Montreal, he had been showing and selling his art fairly regularly. e The ‘cottage‘ has two tiny lights in it, powered by Dâ€"cell batteries in the ‘basement‘, and there are a series of path lights leading down to the dock. It is charming in its detail and there is, no doubt, it carries with a certain "feel good"flllafity-" tx42:iikviars‘ More recently, he has been producâ€" ing his model art roughly at the rate of one a year. It is laborâ€"intensive, time consuming. His third building was another cottage up north. Burns made some major innovaâ€" tions on this project â€" first changing the scale from 1/4 inch:1 foot to 1/8 inch:1 foot, and adding lights through the use of fibreâ€"optics. It worked beautifully, but according to the builder, "It was much finer work, tougher to do." He had never worked with fibreâ€"optics before, so that was a learning experience.
