Hopefully we've heard the last of washroom exploits Dear Sir: Now that the recent issues of homosexual activity in Shell Park seem to have been finalized, albeit preceded and followed by the expected abundance of controversy and radio, newspaper, and television publicity, the total activity in the same area over the past eight or so years is worthy of summation. Approximately eight years ago, myself and former councillor Jackie Cutmore, having received com- plaints from neighboring residents concerning what they believed to be sexual activities in Shell Park, the issue was presented to the Community Services Committee. Dear Sir: _ I am sure that citizens of Halton gave a sigh of relief on learning that "Michaels Canada" (Read, Texas) will favor their region not with one, but two, superstores of arts and crafts supplies this October. What is Michaels? Why waste time? But for those who have not read these announcements before, here it goes again. Michaels is the fastest grow- ing arts and crafts supply chain in the United States (Read the World). Their unique merchandising and marketing techniques makes it nec- essary to bring, not one, but two vice-presidents from the parent organization in the United States. Obviously, there are no qualified executives in Canada, (How do they get a work permit with thousands unemployed?) - OPINION t hasn't taken long for Liberal leader Jean Chretien's true economic agenda to Icome out. While spouting great epithets about spending "billion to create jobs. it now appears that this will only amount to a further case of passing the buck. Or in the words of our southern neighbours-trick/own economics. Last week Chretien said he didnt care how the provinces were to pay for 'their share' of the Liberals' job creation initiative. Well voters. you should care and you should care plenty. If Mr. Chretien has his way. it now seems the only way hell finance his much-vaunted job creation plan, is to have the provinces hit taxpayers again with more taxes. Surprise, surprise. And this from a guy who says he'll deal responsibly with the deficit? So look for even higher taxation at the local level to pay for federally-dictated programs. Ottawa has been closing the valve on transfer payments to the provinces for years and it looks like this isn't going to change even if our federal government does. Canadians deserve better Mr. Chretien. Once upon a time, this country had an institution called F.l.R.A. (Foreign Investment Review Agency) whose task it was to main- tain a level of sanity when it came to foreign acquisitions or invest- ments. The ground rule was that Canadian industry, or the Canadian public, has to benefit by such an investment, acquisition, or takeover. Unfortunately, that was one of the first institutions scrapped by the present federal government. The message was "come on boys, help yourself, the pickings are good". Where is FIRA now that we need it? That wasn't good enough, so FTA and later on NAFTA were introduced. olitical pundits of every Pmost recent public opin surging at the expense of If this trend continues and ti could be looking at the kind O' PCs were ousted in a wave of( many currently Tory ridings wi In the 1974 election. If so, how did vice-presi- dents, McDowells and Payton, get work permits in Canada? What other merchandise cate- gories are those superstore going to carry? After all, 20,000 sq. ft. - that's almost the size of a supennar- ket - would require an awful lot of art paints, brushes, and beads to fill the shelves. The phenomenal success in the United States is due to Michaels unique and innovative relations with their, so they tell us, cus- tomers. Twenty arts and crafts experts on the floor? Fifty? That's what the company's president and three out of five vice- presidents, all from the U.S.A., promised a year ago. Michaels opening dazzled you with previously unseen discounts, on some very visible items - same as the Price Club now, Towers, and many others 30 years ago. But by and large, the bulk of the merchan- dise will be at the same price as your neighborhood art shop or high: er. After a year or so, those dis- counts will disappear and so will your art shop. The only good thing Canada's former prime minister uttered, when debating with Mr. Turner, was, "you could have said lift Sir." And so can the people of Halton and of Canada say; No, to the ever increasing plunder. Stay out of these stores. [ /i/iisi,i.,), af1ljtr ip I"); L:flss's/ (ll (r l "2gg L. Perhaps. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Kim Campbell seems to have her own secret language. When pressed about the sanctity of safety nets, she says, "I am totally committed", When pressed very hard, she "would rather be tied across railroad tracks than cut such programs. Or, "nobody has sug- gested this to me". Decoded, it looks like "Watch me", as Pierre Trudeau said before invoking the War Measures Act. This was on a Friday evening and apparently could not wait until the council meeting on the follow.. ing Monday evening. After several telephone conversations with Town staff and elected officials, I made the decision to authorize the instal- lation of the surveillance camera. I have no concern that innocent people may have been videoed while using the public washroom as I inspected the facility myself dur- ing the course of this surveillance. Without doubt, Oakville would then be in a position to serve its residents more efficiently and more economically. The Citizen's Committee on tax reform describes some most encouraging and well thought out alternatives to the dreaded prospect of 1988 evaluation MNA. Overwhelming support is evi- denced by the delegations, and likewise, by Oakville's mayor and member of Oakville's council. Regional Council is on the brink of endorsing committee's recommendations... democracy, clearly is about to be served! Out of the blue, the mayor of a city called Burlington decides that regional council should not adopt the findings of this tax committee, and should refer the matter to the province, pending some sort of guarantee that Ontario will ultimately implement regional M.V.A. The province, for its part, contemplating such a development would probably find it an embarrassing hot potato, leading in tum to some common-sense reappraisal of Oakville's untenable situation.
