W hy buy CsB‘s? Canada Savings Bonds will pay 4"/.% for the year starting Nov. 1, 1993. The rate will drop from the current 6% down 1%/%. Last year the 6% rate seemed low, but Canadians urchased _ an incredible S9.f billion in new sales and rollovers. Will rates continue to drop after the election or have we seen the bottom? There is no doubt that if I knew the answer, my choices would be simple. However, the question is do I buy CSB‘s today or look at either a GIC or a mutual fund. Mi' research indicates a GIC can still be had as of Friday the 15th at @ 5%/% for a one year term. Yet my imgessions are that GIC rates will likely fall a little before month end, as most institutions will not want such a large éag between CSB‘s and their GJ rates. An alternative would be to look to a fund com‘Sang like MacKenzie Financial who have K;oducts like Income Funds and ortgage Funds on which the returns can be much higher over the longer term. Although this return is not without a certain amount of good fortune, rates have dropped a considerable amount over the last few years. The real decision is not where to put your hard earned dollars but what time lines are you facing. If you have no need for the income or the rincig:l over the next year pelgnaps best choice is a GIC. But bear in mind most GIC‘s can be locked in. If you believe that rates will remain at current levels, or you ma{ wish to make your choice early next year, then a CSB can be cashed in earlé 1994. Tâ€"bills are yielding 4.55% for 90 days and can be cashed at any time. If your needs are to have a monthls' income with a good level 0 safetz;cl see funds like Mackenzie‘s Income Fund as an interesting alternative to a CSB or GIC. Many companies will be offering you competitive products over the next few weeks as the competition for your investment dollars heats up. Perhaps the best choice is not to take the first recommendation. Do a bit of homework and shop around! The rates will vary from institution to institution. This year CSB‘s are not my 1st choice, but they may be right for you.
