But the most significant move, and probably the most costly, came next, when the Chamber moved in 1965 to the fifth floor of a building at the corner of Allan and Lakeshore Road. Here, there were dining facilities and a club room adjacent to the Chamber administration offices. The idea of a restaurant sounded good, but it ended up almost bankrupting the chamber. "We had my daughter‘s wedding reception at this restaurant," says Carberry. "But the restaurant lost $100,000 which kept the Chamber in debt for a long Be it ever so humble time. Various businesses in town did conâ€" tribute $15,000, but this was less than oneâ€"third of the total $50,000 goal for furniâ€" ture. To make up this shortfall, 600 chamber members were asked for voluntary donations of $50 and $100 to cover the costs of computers, typewritâ€" ers and filing cabinets. The move to its present location showed a coming of age," says past president Michael Caine. "The community has grown so much north of the highway that the location is ideally suited for the Chamber.
