ILLE BEAVER Friday. Oct SONOMA VALLEY...Northem California is presumably pretty hot and dry during summer, but this year during the last few days of September, it was almost unbearj able to me. Although the mercury reached only into the 30’s near the coast, here in the Dry Creek Valley of Sonoma it was at least 40. That’s California wine industry in tune with the environment HWâ€"I‘I: 845 5585 g IT’SASEASYAS Leave Update infommation‘ - ENTERIAINMENT - Top 10%eldyMov15 5100 Top 10 Weddy \ï¬deo Rentals ............. 5701 - LIVE THEATRE/ENTERTAINMENT - Coming Events Maple Leaf Gardens ................ It was so hot this year during the harvesting season, that the pickers were gathering only during the early morning hours and late in the after- noon. Payne has won several awards for her textiles and both weavers also offer studio classes on a regular basis. Weavers Christel Wille and Marie Payne will hold their third annual Open Studio Sale, Oct. 23rd and 24th at 1472 Constance Dr., between 10 am. and 5 pm. each day. Weavers open house In weeks to come, I will be visit- ing other regions of California and will take a look at such reknowned wineries as Mondavi, Fetzer, and Sterling amongst a host of smaller ones. For today, I am sold on one of the best Chardonnay wines that I have every tasted. It’s the newly released 1991 Estate Chardonnay from Gallo that is currently sold at our Vintages stores for $39.60 a bottle. When the Gallo brothers first started, their goal was to have the largest winery in the world. They have surely succeeded. Perhaps their wines were not always the best, being mostly of the jug-wine category, but Gallo has also become lately one of North America’s leadâ€" ing quality wineries. Then there is Gallo’s own rule of keeping two acres of wildlife habi- tat for every acre of vines planted. Impossible probably in any other wine growing country, but impresâ€" sive. At the huge Frei Vineyard, insects are used to control harmful pests, successfully and, of course â€" cheaply. There is a leafliopper, for instance, a scrawny insect that attacks the vines in summer, but one that can be controlled effectively with a small wasp. In order to attract the wasp and keep it in the vineyards, Gallo has planted plum trees in the vineyards as a means of attraction to the wasp. They have even paved the roads to control the dust which may inhibit the health of the grape leaves. Gallo, like every other vineyard I visited, uses only natural fertilizer, either manure or cover crops between the vines which are ploughed under from time to time to nourish the soil. Of the dozens of vineyards I visited, not one uses herbicide to kill the weeds. There may be need from time to time to spray the vines for a fungus, but usually only natural controls or bioâ€" logical sprays are used then and the chemicals are kept to a bare mini- mum. From time to time, we hear about wines â€" especially from Europe â€" that may be considered bio-wines, wines with little or no chemicals added to the soil, the grapes, or the wines. Well let me tell you, most Californian wines are like that now. When I ï¬nally located the vine- yard, it was quite a surprise to me, so typical of what I was to find almost everywhere in California during the following days. Here is a wine industry that is not only mod- em, but as progressive or more so than any other in the world. Most of all, I found an industry that cares very much for the environment and makes very little fuss about it. So much for my jug-wine theo-
