The majority of improvements to the Elantra are safety related, howâ€" ever there are some styling changes. Up front there is a new grille, front bumper and lights. The hood and fenders being rewurked to accommodate the latter. The rear end features a new fasâ€" cia and rear lamps. The differences are so small that you need an old Elantra for comparison otherwise the changes might go unnoticed. The two major changes to the ©94 Elantra are the addition of a standard driver‘s side air bag to the GLS model and the addition of antiâ€"lock brakes, both of which have become highly desirable features in the eyes n its brief history the Hy Elantra has undergone a change and the 1994 mode lot unc 1989 LeBaron GT Convertible T 1988 Dodge Aries Stationwagon of many consumers. The A improves what was already a g brake system. During the us brake tests I required just 118 fee stop from 80 km/h. Combine better stopping distances with brake tests 1 required just 118 feet to stop from 80 km/h. Combine the better stopping distances with the security and stability of ABS and things do not get much better. Another area that has been ©23,300 ©15,900 ©10,500 3 19 4; l||“ 1994 Hyundai Elantra ABS sual OOG reworked for the better is the susâ€" pension. The GLS model now feaâ€" tures gas pressurized shocks and struts. The result is much improved comfort and compliance without any sacrifice in the handling characterisâ€" tics. While I did not conduct the usual pilon test I did push the car through some twisty sections of road, enjoyâ€" ing every minute. While not a BMW, the Elantra does stick to the road very well, a lot of the credit going to the Michelin XGT H4 all season radials as well as the improved suspension. Under the hood is 1.8L twinâ€"cam, 16â€"valve, fuel injected four that proâ€" duces 124 horses and 116 lbs/ft of torque. Off the line the car feels a little lack luster, however once the tach reads above 3500 rpm the engine comes nicely on cam providâ€" ing fairly brisk acceleration. Matched with the engine in our tester was a 4â€"speed automatic overâ€" drive transmission that comes comâ€" ing 1a Matche tester w drive tr plete wi oR aR44 58. 088 i ,000 1| wide open throttle. Not much to worry about unless you have a habit of driving with the gas pedal pressed to the floor. For the record we required 10.5 seconds to eclipse the 100 K mark. If you stick with the manual gearbox you share a full second off that time. For an affordable car, and with the base model starting at under $12,000 it is certainly that, the Elantra comes with a lot of standard equipment, especially when you get into the GLS model. Standard stuff includes a power trunk release, remote fuel door release, adjustable seat belt anchors and a 60/40 split folding rear seat. The latter improving the versatility of what is already a roomy trunk. Our test car also came with a lot of other equipment, power windows, locks and mirrors as well as air conâ€" ditioning. New for this year is an air condiâ€" tioning unit the uses environmentalâ€" ly friendly R134A refrigerant rather than R12 freon. The heater controls are of the rotary variety, meaning they are easy to use and regulate. Seat comfort in all positions is good and with the front seats set in the mid position there is a surprising amount of leg room in the rear. The front seats are well shaped and provide above average lateral support. Hyundai suggest that the new Elantra is a car that you can be proud to park in your driveway. Having concluded a complete road test I must say I have to agree. 166 :â€"
