Halton municipalities are going to be asked to take on the responsiâ€" bility of licensing tow truck services. Oakville councillor Fred Oliver said as many as a dozen people in his community complain that tow truck drivers have overcharged them for towing their vehicle from an accident and storing it. Members of the Halton Regional Police Services Board are also angry that while police authorized towing services are required to clean up an accident scene, independent tow truck drivers are not. The situation is too unregulated unless it is a police towing job, he said. The police services board directed regional staff to contact the municipalities to assure this request is considered and not shelved. The police towing contracts were awarded at the meeting. Towing charges will be a fixed rate, except where specific services are itemâ€" "Our staff has no authority over individuals calling their own tow service," said Oliver. "But licensing could cover that." Jim Watson, director of administrative services for the police, said that the new rates are below the average for the industry. "So people should not be ripped off," he said.
