A tall, boyish 54â€"yearâ€"old, with a mop of white hair, Grout is no unbiâ€" ased observer. The viceâ€"president of a Bay Street investment firm (Deacon Barclays de Groete Wedd) by profession, he was recently reâ€" elected chair of the Sheridan College Board of Governors. It is his sixth and final year on the board (his second as chair), and he is an unapologetic Sheridan booster. ameron Grout (rhymes with stout, which he is not), arrived in Oakville with his family in 1976, about nine years after Sheridan College appeared on the landscape. Little did he know how their destinies would intersect. â€" "A lot of people don‘t know what kind of a jewel it is," he notes. "They don‘t realize what we have to offer." "Our focus is to teach technoloâ€" gy, the applied arts," he adds. "Some Sheridan grads are far more advanced (than University grads), from a knowledge point of view." And yet, he states, the old stigma persists, ‘just a college, not a uniâ€" versity‘. It‘s tough to combat. Don‘t people know that many Sheridan students are university graduates? And if you think it‘s a forgone conclusion that everyone gets into Sheridan, think again. The competiâ€" tion is keen. This fall, Sheridan, with its variâ€" ety of campuses in Brampton, For hundreds of years it has been the most popular item in the Middle East. In the 1970‘s it was introduced in Holland and it found the same success. Now it‘s time for you to give it a try. Medium Size Chicken Shawarma Dish Special of the Week Mississauga, and Burlington, as well as Oakville, had openings for 4,600 first year, fullâ€"time students: 33,000 applied. Oakville‘s Trafalgar Road camâ€" pus has become a ‘centre of excelâ€" lence‘, recognized nationâ€"wide, for programs in Animation, Fashion, and Theatre Arts, in addition to all the other fine courses in Business, Community Health, Computing, Engineering, and Technology (to name but a few). "We ended up admitting 5,100," our distinguished gentleman points out. "Only about one in six." In total, the community college has an enrolment of 10,000 fullâ€" time students and about 65,000 partâ€"time students in the Continuing Education program. In part, this rush on the school has been caused by the economic slump; and in part, by the fine repuâ€" tation the college has established. Yes, he allows, with that enthusiâ€" astic grin, "It is a big responsibiliâ€" ty," (being chair of the Board of Governors), but he maintains, "There are an awful lot of profesâ€" sionals employed at the college (almost 1,000) to ensure it functions efficiently." "They are terrific people, he says, "from the president (Mary Hofstetter), right down to the botâ€" tom rung." The board is strictly policyâ€"makâ€" ing, Grout says. We have no hand in the dayâ€"toâ€"day management of the school. That is done by the presiâ€" dent and her staff. She reports reguâ€" larly to the board and asks for guidâ€" ance when needed. The chairman reports that he finds his volunteer job tremendousâ€" ly rewarding. "Essentially," he says candidly, "I am chair of a corporation with a yearly budget of $110â€"million. I am responsible for the livelihood of 1,000 people and the education of tens of thousands of students." It‘s enough to get anybody‘s adrenalin flowing. This father of two daughters seems to thrive on it. He laughs at the notion that it might be "time consuming and onerous," especially in light of the fact that he also serves on a number of provinâ€" cial committees representing, not only Sheridan, but the 23â€"member gamut of Community Colleges in Ontario.
