Folk Art Shows, Inc. P. O. Box 111, Ortonville, MI 48462 (313)634â€"4151 Set realistic goals for yourself (Continued from page 14) for that purpose. It is a resource manual deluxe, offering an indepth guide for interviewing techniques â€" as well as a multitude of potential quesâ€" tions â€" information on prompting memory, and tips on basics like what tapes to use, how to frame your subâ€" ject and editing. Whether you‘re looking for a simâ€" ple or more complex living portrait, McLaughlin emphasizes the need for preparation, not necessarily the purâ€" chase of additional equipment to inteâ€" grate music or narration, but the need to focus on the project, set realistic goals, know what questions to ask and find the proper setting, preferably away from humming refrigerators and ringing phones. Small wonder McLaughlin‘s soft, cover book is saturated with facts and detailed advice, and praised by such esteemed interviewers as Stuart McLean of CBC‘s Morningside. McLaughlin‘s journalistic credentials are impressive and he has long held a fascination and a passion for interâ€" viewing and the development of the skills necessary to execute the ‘artâ€" form‘ successfully. McLaughlin was armed with an English degree from Carleton University when he "walked in off the street" and became a researcher for CBC Radio. Ten months later, leaving more experienced and longer serving employees in the dust, he became a producer. McLaughlin stayed with CBC Radio between 1973 and 1983 workâ€" ing as a producer, interviewer, researcher and news reporter. His freeâ€" lance writing career, which he launched in 1978, has included work for such magazines as Saturday Night, Financial Post and Toronto Life and scripts for the National Film Board. He has also taught radio production, magazine writing and interviewing, a subject on which he has also presented seminars. "I think it‘s an amazing and priviâ€" leged experience to sit down with someone and ask them questions about their actions, their ideas, experiâ€" ences.." As people often open up to a stranger, so do they often click with an interviewer and an instant and intiâ€" mate bond can be formed, he says. "We get permission to ask people questions often friends and intimates can‘t," says McLaughlin. A Family Remembers published by Self Counsel Press, is one of severâ€" al publications he has authored, anothâ€" er being Asking Questions: The Art of the: Media Interview, which has sold more than 10,000 copies. Even without a publicity blitz for A Family Remembers, the book has caused a stir. McLaughlin has been asked to produce a brief adaptation for Good Housekeeping Magazine which has a readership of some five million and he will be appearing on Newsworld Nov. 18th at 2:30 p.m. and at Quest Booksellers, 123 Trafalgar Rd.
