An Oakville Fire Department aerial truck cools down the empty storage tank that caught on fire at the Petroâ€"Canada refinery in Bronte Thursday night. Empty refinery tank fire lights up switchboards Dense black smoke from a fire in an empty storage tank at the Petroâ€"Canada Trafalgar Refinery in Bronte lit up the switchboards of the Oakville Fire Department, Petroâ€"Canada Hotline and the Oakville Beaver before supper Thursday. The black smoke billowing from the storage tanker raised concerns from nearby residents who called the Beaver wondering if they should evacuate. But according to Oakville fire officials and a Petroâ€"Canada spokesperson the fire was quickly contained and no injuries were suffered. Oakville Platoon Chief Cliff Goodale said the fire was located in an empty asphalt storage tanker which had not been used in a year. "That‘s why it was making so much smoke," said Goodale. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. The Oakville Fire Department received a call to provide back up for the Petro Canada refinery fire department at 4:32 p.m. Goodale said the fire was quickly contained but at supperâ€" time an aerial truck was still hosâ€" ing down the storage tank to keep it cool. (Photo by Barrie Erskine) Petroâ€"Canada spokesperson John Hunt called the incident a "small fire." He said the fire appears to have started on the roof of the storage tank and may have been caused by "some plastic igniting." "Our response was immediate and they put it out almost immeâ€" diately," said Hunt. The Oakville Fire Department reported numerous inquiries from concerned residents and area media. A spokesman at the Petroâ€" Canada Hotline said all inquiries would be responded to as quickly as possible. Mon. to Wed.
