A few days later, Yeo murdered 24â€"yearâ€"old Karen Marquis of Sackville, N.B. and tried to abduct another young woman. While being pursued by Hamilton police, he took his own life. Fatal Mistakes is an examination of the circumstances leading to those tragic events. While autographing copies of his latest book in the Appleby College gym last week, Marron took time out to talk about his reasons for writing it. As a court reporter for the Globe and Mail, he said he was daily confronted by "really difficult and awful stories. In the year it took him to research the book, he said he interviewed Nina‘s friends and spent a great deal of time talking with her mother, Priscilla de Villiers. At the end of it all, he realized the tragedy of losing a young, vibrant woman with the potential for a fulfilling life ahead of her. "I felt I needed to write about them to make sense of them," he said. After attending the inquest into the suicide death of Jonathan Yeo, Marron concluded there was also a tragedy on the flip side of the coin in the form of a breakdown of the justice and social serâ€" vices networks involved. Because of it, Marron said Nina‘s murderer, a man long known to authorities as troubled, angry and with an extensive history of sexâ€"related crimes, "slipped through the cracks." And yet, knowing all this, he was let out on bail. "As I sat through each day of that inquest, I was shocked by the extent of the bungling and carelessness that were exposed," he wrote. "Society‘s failure to deal with sexual predators and violence against women was illustrated more clearly in this case than in any other that I have ever encountered in 15 years as a journalist." Although not "crazy" in the medical sense, psychiatrists dubbed Yeo as a man with an antiâ€"social personality disâ€" order, more commonly known as a psyâ€" chopath or sociopath. They said he was "a time bomb" waiting to explode and yet apparently they could do nothing to prevent him exploding.
