Oakville duo end McMaster Marauders soccer season on a disappointing note By DAVID RAAKMAN Special to The Beaver akville‘s Sue Badger and Nancy Pisani have shared many good times, but must now suffer through some disapâ€" pointment. The two McMaster University students found little success this weekend as members of the school‘s varsity soccer team. The duo returned from Montreal, Sunday, after competing in the national university championships where the McMaster Marauders failed to qualify for the medal round of the sixâ€"team tournament. In McMaster‘s first game of the competition, Badger scored only her second goal of the season, breaking a 1â€"1 tie with archâ€"rival Wilfrid Laurier. From then on, the weekend was disappointing for Badger. The Marauders lost the game 4â€"2 and early in their second match, Badger suffered ligament damage to her ankle and knee. "We were sorry to lose her," said McMaster coach Frank Donlavey, concerning Badger‘s injury in the 1â€"0 loss to Dalhousie University. "She‘s one of our dominant players in the backfield." "She does an awesome job in the centre (fullback position)," said Pisani. "We missed her on the field but we have five strong defenders who can play well back there." It was Pisani and Badger‘s secâ€" ond trip to the nationals after finâ€" ishing fourth at last year‘s competiâ€" tion hosted by McMaster. But the two team leaders felt the tournaâ€" ment was very different this year. Both Badger and Pisani trained with the team in the preâ€"season of 1991, but decided not to play that year; Pisani for academic reasons while Badger opted to tryâ€"out for varsity basketbal!. In the following year, both came back to the soccer team and became integral players as part of the starting lineâ€"up. "She plays her (midfield) position well and is not afraid to come back and defend." The weekend‘s tournament was special for Pisani as she has no plans to return to McMaster after graduating this April. "I don‘t think it‘s really sunk in yet," she said. "It feels like I‘m still going to practice.
