Now while I did not conduct the usual pilon test I did push the car through some twisty sections of road, enjoying every minute. While not a BMW. the Elantra does stick to the road very well, a lot of the credit going to the Michelin XGT H4 all season radials as well as the improved suspension. Under the hood is 1.8L twin- cam, l6-valve. fuel injected four that produces 124 horses and 116 lbs/ft of torque. Off the line the car feels a little lack luster. however once the tach reads above 3500 rpm the engine comes nicely on cam providing fairly brisk acceleration. Matched with the engine in our tester was a 4-speed automatic over- drive transmission that comes com- plete with dual modes and an on/off switch for the overdrive. In the economy mode the upshifts are smooth and well co-ordinated. In the normal mode, however, they become a little harsh at wide open throttle. Not much to worry about unless you have a habit of driving Another area that has ben reworked for the better is the sus- pension. The GLS model now fea- tures gas pressurized shocks and struts. The result is much improved comfort and compliance without any sacrifice in the handling charac- teristics. 2TS The two major changes to the '94 Elantra are the addition of a standard driver's side air bag to the GLS model and the addition of anti- lock brakes, both of which have become highly desirable features in the eyes of many consumers. The ABS improves what was already a good brake system. During the usual brake tests I required just 118 feet to stop hom 80 km/h. Combine the better stopping distances with the security and stability of ABS and things do not get much better. Having concluded a complete road test I must say I have to agree. The only other item worthy of note is the build quality. It rivals any of the other cars in this seg- ment.
