The views of New Let me give you a few impressions of a Transatlantic crossing â€" a cruise very different from a sevenâ€"day Caribbean or Alaska cruise. Last week, I had the pleasure of completing a cruise â€" a Transatlantic crossing on the Queen Elizabeth 2 â€" that started in 1982. In 1982, Heather and I were booked for this cruise on the QE2, but the ship was called to naval service by the British Navy for the Falkland‘s War! Minimum time was spent out on deck as our speed of 28 knots (about 12 miles per hour) combined with 20 mph headwinds resulted in 50 mph winds on deck. York City from the ship were magnifiâ€" cent! Expecting the worst for a November North Atlantic crossing, we had very calm seas throughout, partially sunny and the temperature between 40â€"50°F during the days. As you only have one port of call â€" Southampton, your destination â€" you quickly settle into the shipboard life and truly escape from the rest of the world! Life onâ€"board the QE2 is very luxuâ€" rious! Cabin service and dining room service are amongst the best I‘ve enjoyed at sea. The only criticism would be that bar service in the public rooms was slow. An extensive shopping promenade offered a wide selection of clothes, jewelry, china, and QE2 souvenirs which I found expensive. There is also a small Harrods shop onâ€"board. Submitted by Bob Kerby, Cruise Holidays, 338â€"2077. There is something for everyone on the QE2‘s daily activity program. The aerobics, gym, and spa programs start early in the day. You may keep busy midâ€"morning through late afternoon with computer courses in the computer center, bridge lessons and tournaments, art lectures, lessons and auctions. Our sailing up the estuary and arrival at Southampton was also in beautiful sunshine â€" a fitting end to a fabulous cruise on the last great Transatlantic liner . . . the Queen Elizabeth 2! The guest lecturers covered a wide range of subjects including: the theater, personal financial management, the ‘Concorde‘, famous detectives of ficâ€" tion, and famous women poisoners (which was well attended!). The ship is truly magnificent! There is extensive wood paneling in the pubâ€" lic rooms and corridors, and there are paintings covering the walls throughout the ship. My favorite was the afternoon tea at 4 p.m. each day. I passed on the sandâ€" wiches, but enjoyed the ‘best‘ pastries I‘ve had in years! Did you know that they bake their breads and rolls three times a day. The Maurentania Dining Room is for Transatlantic Class and has two seatings. The food was fabulous! Not a complaint was heard from anyone! The QE2 has two classes of stateâ€" rooms, Firstâ€"Class and Transatlantic Class. Depending on your choice, you will then be assigned one of our dining rooms. The Queen‘s Grill, Princess‘ Grill, and Columbia Dining Rooms are for Firstâ€"Class and feature single seatâ€" ing dining. eet oeee oo bon 5424 5011 5499
