"I feel really lucky to be here, doing what I‘m doing," says Stephen Sitarski. "The tremendous variety of the job. People rely on me for my ability and judgement. I have to pinch myself sometimes when I realize people are paying me to do this." The WSO season is a draining one, running 36 weeks and featurâ€" ing more than 100 concerts between September and May at the 2,200 seat Centennial Concert Hall. The offerings include kids and pop conâ€" certs as well as the recular orchesâ€" concertmaster of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. As second in command in the orchestra‘s violins, he is in a support role, ensuring that everything the concertmaster "Gwen Hoebig does gets communiâ€" cated back into the section." In an attempt to broaden its audiâ€" ence base, the innovative WSO launched the New Music Festival (See ‘Life‘ page 20) tral fare. Up until this year â€" when the orchestra suffered a 30% cutâ€" back in support from the city of Winnipeg â€" the orchestra operated in the black, says Sitarski, a comfortâ€" able situation not familiar to most major orchestras.
