To that end, parents Walter and Kimberley Lo, of Oakville, held a press conference Wednesday at the Children‘s Hospital at Chedokeâ€" McMaster Medical Centre to explain their situation and draw attention to the Unrelated Bone Marrow Donor Registry. With Erik seated between them, the couple outlined the urgent need for people to enlist to help not only their son ,but also countless others. ‘"We urge everyone out there to register," said Walter who, with his wife, wore tâ€"shirts labelled "A new marrow ... a new life." Walter characterized his family as "very private people," but explained that the situation demands that they reach out. Six weeks ago Erik developed fluâ€"like symptoms and it was determined at Oakvilleâ€"Trafalgar Memorial Hospital that he was "severely aneâ€" mic." A more devastating diagnoâ€" sis followed. Since then â€" as Erik has underâ€" gone one surgery and two chemotherapy treatments â€" the couâ€" ple has been camping out in his small room, waiting until the disâ€" ease goes into remission so that his blood can be tested and the search can begin for a compatible donor. Walter said doctors estimate this may happen in three weeks.
