YOUR CHRISTMAS SHOPPING Although hockey overshadowed the violin when Sitarski was a youngâ€" ster, that changed when he met Leo Wigdorchik at the age of 11. A player with the Toronto Symphony, Wigdorchik encouraged Sitarski to enter competitions and instilled in the young string player a strong work ethic and selfâ€"discipline. After attending the University of Toronto, and playing professionally with a variety of different ensembles "This was a real tour de force. It really put us on the map," says Sitarski. No other orchestra in North America has ever attempted this... there are so many potential pitfalls." "Point by point, gently but firmly" Fenyves dissected Sitarski‘s playing, an experience which proved tremendously cathartic. "He gave me the freedom to express the emotional content of the music, instead of just worrying about getting the notes in the right place," "I was working in Toronto at the time, playing in the (Canadian) opera orchestra. I was making pretty good money but I was limited in what I could do. I thought, there‘s got to be a way of improving so it‘s not such a struggle. It was physical, I was tight." in and around Toronto, Sitarski became disillusioned with his playing and moved on to Banff to join some friends in a string quartet. MRS. Visitors to the New Art Space Gallery at 83 Reynolds St. tomorrow (Dec. 4th) are invited to check out a special Christmas tree decorated with angelic figures created by local artists and children. It gets underway at 4:00 p.m. And children interested in learning how to make these angels can do so every Sunday up to Dec. 19th. Cost of the classes for 6 yearâ€"olds and up, is $15 per session. The move to Winnipeg proved to be one of the many right ones he has made along the way. He loves the city for its culture and sports and he is firmly committed to the orchestra‘s mandate. After the season is over, he, like anyone else given a long overdue break, likes to get away from his proâ€" fession. "I usually travel," says Sitarski. This past summer, however, a month of his time was devoted to a very special project, the debut recordâ€" ing of the Emperor Quartet. ‘hors d‘oeuvres‘, featuring "mellow, relaxed music‘ was recorded in Toronto‘s Glenn Gould Studio. (It‘s available at L‘ Atelier Grigorian and all major Toronto music stores) "It‘s a tremendous city. The people of Winnipeg support the arts like crazy.. We play for the opera and the (Royal Winnipeg) ballet. No other orchestra does this much variety of ""We had two mikes in front of us and just above us. The sounds you hear are the sounds we produced. It‘s a wonderfully warm blend," says Sitarski. The recording is just one more reaâ€" son why Sitarski finds life a challenge and a joy. "It seems like my whole life hasn‘t been planned," says Sitarski. "I‘ve never thought of doing that. I‘ve always had a fairly good instinct about going where things seemed right. I‘ve struggled a lot but I feel really lucky. I feel like I‘m really living. Every seaâ€" son is an adventure." Participating artists include Alan Kingsland, Frances Tyrrell, Jamie Owen, Doreen Wilson, Helen Straiton and gallery owner Ilze Berzins. This newfound confidence and enjoyment in playing won him the WSO job, along with, of course, his tremendous experience garnered from associations with such musical groups as Spain‘s L‘ Orquestra del Festival Internacional de Cadaques, the Esprit Orchestra, the Roy Thomson Hall Orchestra, Les Amis Chamber Ensemble, theToronto Symphony and Symophony Nova Scotia. Sitarski sought the position of associate concertmaster because "I had some experience with the position and I wanted to be involved more with a big orchestral repertoire." Sitarski‘s metamorphosis was almost complete. From Wigdorchik, he had the work ethic, from Fenyves the analytical, intellectual approach and from Joyce Robbins, a Stoneybrook instructor, Sitarski received polish. ""She brought a lot of style to my music. She made me interesting to lisâ€" ten to," he says. Fenyves also recommended Sitarski continue his studies which he did for two years at Stoneybrook, in New York where he earned his masâ€" ters degree, returning to Banff in the summer to work with Fenyves. says Sitarski.
