"Those are things you can‘t learn in class." Kris Stackhouse, a Grade 8 student at Oakville‘s Eastview School, learned from his visit to the centre, he didn‘t want to be a firefighter. Now, he is interested in sports journalism. Tracy Coyne, also in the adult education program, has learned some tips from HIEC on competâ€" ing in this job market. "How to sell yourself is important now," she said. The 30â€"second summary of your skills is one technique she is taking away. "It was a lot easier before. Now there is a lot of competition and interviews," said Chermak. "If I had the opportunity 15 years ago to choose a career direction, it would have helped," she said. "Now I can learn all the careers that exist." The job search market is more competitive than she experienced in past years. She remembers finding jobs readily or having them find her. HIEC opened her eyes to what businesses exist in Halton and what kind of jobs they offer.
