Escape to the West By Bo Janak August 1968: dle of the night, QUALITY PET PRODUCTS I awoke in the midâ€" about 3 a.m., to the The powerful armies of the Soviet Bloc had descended on the young, rockâ€"throwing, resistance fighters of Bratislava. A curfew was inunediately enforced and anyone caught outside after 6 p.m. or before 6 a.m. was shot. The Czechoslovakian people fought back. I witnessed a Russian soldier being pulled from his truck by an angry mob that rolled the vehicle into a river, but stones and bricks were no match for the sophisticated Soviet milâ€" itary. That fall, I was reluctantly drafted into the Czeck army and had completâ€" ed my medical, but I had no desire to serve the Soviets or shoot my fellow countrymen. The only alternative was to escape the country, but I could not obtain a passport or visa because I was young, heathy, and awaiting military service. My older brother was disâ€" abled, so I "borrowed" his identificaâ€" tion and crossed into Austria. % Austria is cold in October. My friend, Joe, and I slept outside in parks, often huddling together in phone booths to keep warm. Then we met another boy, Anton, from back home who had enough money to rent a room and buy food. We stayed at his place for awhile until we learned that the Red Cross had setâ€"up cots for refugees in an old army arsenal. We stayed until December, pondering our next move. We had few options. Although we would have preferred to stay in Europe, there were no countries accepting refugees on a permanent basis. First, we tried South Africa. They laughed when we told them we wanted to be guards on their cocoa plantations, but they agreed to accept Joe and me. Anton was too young; they said he would have to wait until. he turned eighteen. We told them we, had to stick together; it was all three of us or none. They chose none. threatening throb of hovering Russian helicopters outside my bedroom winâ€" dow. By dawn ominous tanks had been stationed throughout the city. I was seventeen, almost eighteen, and worked in a local TV station. It eventually became clear that no country would accept Anton because he was only seventeen, so Joe and Iâ€" continued the search alone. Australia accepted us; we obtained our vaccinaâ€" tions; they took our passports 48 hours4 prior to the flight...then we changed our minds. Anxious to spend our weekl allowance on some new Canadia clothes, we wandered, wideâ€"eyed, int a store on Bloor Street called "Hone: Ed‘s". Some attractive jackets, at outrageously low price, caught ou eyes and we fumbled through o Englishâ€"Czech dictionary to deciphe; the largest word on the sign "LEATHER". The smaller word must have read "imitation" becaus we froze during the rest of that winte in our flimsy "Canadian leather" jack ets. ... the man at the manpower ofliceé gave me a weekly allowance o money, examined my hands to see if Ii was used to physical labor and sent me to a mattress factory to help load trucks. I didn‘t last the day. The jol was fine for the huge, muscular wor ers they employed but tqo heavy for skinny immigrant kid. Trial and error, not wisdoms brought me to Canada; it was mor like a haphazard adventure than planned crusade, and I feel lucky ti have found this country. There is on thing that I would recommend to new: comers: "Know English before yo arrive here, otherwise you‘ll set you self back four or five years." While visiting the Canadian: embassy, we dxscovered brochures, inviting literature, and promises of expenseâ€"free travel an accommodation. We collected our. stamped passports from Australia an« came to Canada instead. 1
