Police chief $ ' in hospital with C‘HRTISTM AS Halton Police Chief James Harding is in Burlington hospital battling a case of pneumonia. Harding, who has diabetes, sufâ€" fered a mild heart attack in November, of last year, and was off for seven weeks. he spent one week in intensive care. "We‘re hoping he is going to recover fully," said Martin. "He‘s quite ill," said Martin. "He‘s going to be off for an indeterâ€" minate amount of time." Martin said the pneumonia is a complication related to his heart attack a year ago. Harding is scheduled to retire at the end of this month and accept a position as head of operations at Ontario‘s Special Investigations Unit, which probes serious police incidents, including shootings. Peter Campbell, OPP Deputy Commissioner of Field Operations, has been hired to assume command of the service on Jan. 1, 1994. Harding, 59, was admitted to Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital, Sunday, according to Halton police spokesman Sgt. Joe Martin. Filling in as acting police chief is Deputy Chief John Barrett, said Martin.
