L Buses will be routed based on a computer analysis. It's expected the provincial education ministry will soon force local school boards to integrate their transit systems. About $7-million is spent each year by the public board for busing, while the Catholic board spends about SS-million. The integration will begin next September on selected routes. The board has also agreed merge into a single transit service with the public school board to take effect by September of 1995, with an expected saving to both boards. Halton’s board is expected to approve the merger when it votes on the issue next week. Most of the "special case" stu- dents were affected by things like housing construction, dangerous street crossings, and lack of side- walks. Utters will be sent to the par- ents advising them of the changes, and about the board's "empty seat" policy, which permits students to ride if there's extra room. As a cost-cutting move, Halton's Catholic school board has approved a policy cutting off "special case" stu- dents horn 18 schools, most of them elementary school kids who live less than l.6 kilometres (one mile) from their school. The limit for high school kids is 3.2 kilometres (two miles). It looks as if Halton school chil- dren from both the Catholic and pub- lic boards will be riding the same buses by next September. And a lot more students will be walking, too. School boards to share buses 333m gg! :29
