While we are on the subject of drinking, if I had an award for responsibility, and that may be a thought for next year, it surely must go to Seagram Canada. "How to Talk About Alcohol" is a free proâ€" gram designed for parents with preâ€" feens. The easy to follow audio casâ€" sette and handbook is packed with information and facts which every youngster and parent should know about alcohol including how to reach your youngster, all about peer pressure, and other difficult situaâ€" tions. Give your children a good start in life and order your free kit by writing to: Seagram Canada, P.O. Box 847, Station H, Montreal, P.Q. H3G 2M8. Well done, Seagram! Worldâ€"wide, the consumption of alcohol per capita is still falling slowly. While the producers of hard liquors are not rolling in ecstasy, it is good news for the wine industry. As gonsumption of alcohol falls slowly, the number of people who drink wines are actually on the increase. The past year was one of surprisâ€" es, and a year that, if all is taken into consideration, was quite positive to us the consumers. Best of all, it promises to be even better in 1994. Canadian wines, especially the VQA wines from Ontario, have perâ€" formed extremely well. Ever since our industry established, the Vintners Quality Alliance, our wines have been accepted internationally and have won medals at nearly every competition. Keep this in mind... the next time you buy a wine from Canada and look for the VQA label on the neck of the bottle. It assures you that the wine is one that is produced wholly from grapes grown in the area to the highest standards. By the way, I believe Ontario produces the best Ice Wines anywhere. 1993 saw the first announceâ€" ments from the medical profession that the moderate consumption of Wwine is beneficial to one‘s health. 1 tinderstand that this is a hot subject as there is also the abuse of alcohol to be considered, but prohibition did not work nor will it ever, so we are doing the right thing by educating the public. I have plenty of material from the most respected health proâ€" fessionals and universities, which actually advocate the moderate conâ€" sumption of wine, and I would foreâ€" see that by the end of ©94, the health aspect of drinking wine will be a wellâ€"known fact. I support every organization that is dedicated in their fight against impaired driving. I also have a sugâ€" gestion. The National Department of Justice in the USA has determined that the percentage of people arrestâ€" ed for impaired driving who report drinking wine is two (2%). Can you imagine how few impaired drivers we would have if everybody would drink wine? Could it be that wine drinkers are more responsible? Another award I may have in place by next year could be the Best Wine List of a local restaurant as January busy at Centre Dec. 26. 1993 A year of surprises in the wine world January will be a busy month at the Oakville Centre with an assortâ€" ment of offerings guaranteed to please theatreâ€"goers of all ages.
