It was a very busy year for firefighters To date, local firefighters have been involved with 2,736 fires and other emergency calls, up 207 from last year. (Continued from page 1) Hamiltonâ€"Wentworth and Brant County â€" took 1,302 calls, almost double the ‘normal‘ number of calls for this time of year, according to Leo Laviolette, Director of Motoring Services for the HAC. The HAC reported 942 calls Dec. 23rd; 595 calls Christmas Eve, 192 Christmas Day â€" "everybody stayed home" and 906 calls Boxing Day, said Laviolette. "I‘ve seen higher...sometimes in January if we get a really bad snowstorm, we can get 1,400 or 1,500 calls," he added. "Normally, we do about 700 calls a day around this time of year. (Dec. 27th) was the busiest day so far this month and so far this winter." Sixty ï¬er cent of the calls over the Christmas weekend were for boosts, 25% for tows and the rest for problems such as flat tires and lockouts. "Somebody might go through a car wash and leave it (the car) in the parking lot," explained Laviolette. "Make sure your battery and charging system are working at peak efficiency," he said. "And on very cold days, if you‘re not going anyâ€" where you should not try to start your car because you‘ve just used up quite a bit of power." _ It has been a busy year so far for the Oakville Fire Department, which has responded to nearly 200 more calls than 1992. Auto club kept busy over holidays thanks to recordâ€"setting cold snap _ HAC customers were waiting up to three hours yesterday and even longer the day before, said Laviolette, who has some advice for car owners while the deep freeze conditions last. o. 29, 1993 Firefigchters extinguished 118 If you are injured in a car accident on or after January 1, 1994, you are automatically entitled to new, enhanced accident benefits from your insurance company.
