Jan. 12, 1994 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Mulvale opts out of budget committee By HOWARD MOZEL Oakville Beaver Staff ayor Ann Mulvale has bowed out from her duties ? n the 1994 Budget 1 Committee in order to spend time | with her ailing husband. _ On Friday, Mulvale informed her fellow councillors that her husband Peter had recently been diagnosed with melanoma, a form of skin canâ€" cer.. On Saturday, she presented the members of the Budget Committee with a personal memo outlining the reasons for her withdrawal. Mr. Mulvale, 50, was to undergo surgery today at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. / The Mulvales learned of the disâ€" Peter Mulvale: undergoing surgery today at OTMH ease when Peter had a mole removed from an arm. Social Contract means Jjust one ambulance this week By HOWARD MOZEL Oakville Beaver Staff f Be extra careful during the next week: for four nights there will be only one raimbulance available in the entire town of Oakville. In order to meet its obligations under the Social Contract, the Haltonâ€" ississauga Ambulance Service has decided to save money by reducing serâ€" vice. As a result, for seven nights in January the company will drop a pair of vehicles â€" one in Peel and one at its Wyecroft Road station. (Ordinarily there are two in Oakyville.) y The first night was to have been last Friday but, because of the snowstorm, "partâ€"time workers were brought in. As a result, the regular number of vehicles was still on call. According to Gord Armes, president of Ontario Public Service Employees Union Local 207, the next oneâ€"ambulance shift takes place tonight (Wednesday) followed by Thursday, Sunday and Monday. { _ ‘"‘We rob Peter to pay back Paul all the time," he says. "We always draw from ripheral areas." Still, Armes says it‘s dangerous to have only one ambulance on call in a town of nearly 120,000 people. The end result will be more time spent by police officers and firefighters at the scene of accidents and other emergency situations. â€" The poor Joe Public is going to be lying in a snowbank waiting for an bulance," warned Armes. The Haltonâ€"Mississauga Ambulance Service is a private company but is f100% funded by the province. Rather than hammer out their own unique deal with employees, says Armes, the management of the Service chose to simply fall back on fail safe provisions r,ontained in Social Contract legislation. This cost 94 frontâ€"line employees 96 hours each in order for the service to achieve approximately $169,000 in Social Contract responsibilities. | ALONE, ANGRY, CONFUSED, HURTING? Mulvale also asked that Ward 6 councillor Jim Smith replace her on the Budget Committee. ‘Mayor Mulvale has requested that this action be taken to allow her to maintain a flexible schedule in light of her husband Peter‘s recently diagâ€" nosed illness, melanoma. The mayor will be with her husband during furâ€" ther consultation, tests and surgery which will be necessary for treatment of the condition," said Town Clerk Judith Muncaster. "The mayor will be in attendance at the 1994 Budget Committee meetings as often as posâ€" sible, in light of her schedule and will continue to perform the functions of her office." While Smith is an ideal replaceâ€" ment â€" he was chairman of the Budget Committee two years ago and is a senior member of Council â€" it is a responsibility he‘d rather not have assumed. "It‘s sad," he said. "I told Ann whatever I can do, obviously I will do. I willingly said I would." Councillors Liz Behrens and Keith Bird, who served as acting mayor this month and last, are both already serving on the Budget Committee. Last night, Council approved a recommendation to appoint Smith as the mayor‘s replacement. As a result, the Budget Committee now consists of chairman Kathy Graham, Sean Weir, Behrens, Bird and Smith.
