"They sent me up to the roof where they keep people and told me to stay there for five minutes," Hassan told the group. "I stayed there for three months." Hassan said conditions in the ‘safe house‘ were overcrowded and prisonâ€" ers were deprived of light, food, water, sleep, and even bathroom privâ€" ileces. Hussan was asked to accompany the security officers to their headquarâ€" ters for 15 minutes for questioning. "They gave (the houses) nice names," he said. Being beaten and being mocked was a part of daily life. "It was just a house controlled by security people, and they could do anything they wanted to do. It was God‘s wish whether he wanted to take you or leave you behind." Hassan was eventually told that he was being held for helping rebels in the south and for being a unionist. He had been a member of a civil aviation group for almost 20 years before the military government took power and dissolved all democratic political parâ€" ties, trade unions, and associations. But being released from prison was only the first step for Hassan. Having been blacklisted by security people, he could not find work, which left him with no choice but to flee from Sudan or face further stays in jail. Due to pressure in the forms of letâ€" terâ€"writing by numerous human rights groups, including _ Amnesty International, many of the prisoners were set free, including Hassan. "Amnesty International (played) a big role in releasing so many prisonâ€" ers in my country by sending letters and making petitions. They gave us some emotional support; you get the feeling that someone is caring about you." "I wasn‘t allowed to leave the country, but I was smuggled to Egypt anyway," Hassan explained, adding that he had to leave his wife, two teenage sons, and 12â€"yearâ€"old daughâ€" ter behind. A few weeks later, he was in Canada claiming political refugee status. Currently, living in St. Catharines, Hassan is keeping busy by looking for work and arranging to have his family join him here. "Canada was the safest place for me to come. I was looking for a safe place. For a future for my kids. To rest at last... people should thank God for the democracy and freedom in Canada," he told the group. Although he doesn‘t have much of a life left in Sudan, Hassan still yearns for the day he can return home. "Whatever experience I (had there), it‘s my, country at last. One day I will go (back) for sure. But not to this government. I‘m waiting for changes and I hope (they‘ll come) soon." Hassan explained that he was speaking to the group about his expeâ€" riences to inform people about what is happening in the Sudan. "I think people who have such memories or experiences should highlight them. People should be aware. It‘s one globe. It‘s one sun." JAN. 31/94 AND RECEIVE COMPLIMENTARY PASTA COURSE OR WEDDING CAKE.
