Robert is in Grade 9.‘ Oakville‘s Business School By WILMA BLOKHUIS Focus Editor ~ t seems Robert‘s dependence on cigarettes and his addiction to nicotine the result of many influences inshis life: peer pressure during his first year in high school; one or both of{his parents may be smokers and chances are, he had his first cigarette at age 11. Now at age 15, he‘s a regular smoker. Smoking is becoming (more prevalent among teens, according to surveys on tobacecg use. In Halton, a survey of 393 Grade 9 students in Oakville showed an overall smoking rate of 17.1%. Of that number, 71% bought their own cigarette$, despite an old law stating tobacco cannot be sold to individuals under 18. Of the 67 smokers (323 surveyed dldn t smoke) 45 of them were 14â€"yearâ€"olds and 20 of thein were 15. (There was also one 16â€"yearâ€"old and gne 17â€"yearâ€"old who smoked) The age group covered ingluded 13 to 19 years. Chance are, Robert will quit during his adult years, realizing the harmful effects of smoking on his heart and lungs.
