an. 26, 1994 Last week‘s CBC "Dieppe" â€" fact or fiction? Too much showbiz hyperbole, you know, TV‘s golden rule of motion, color, noise? Infidelity to the reality as we seniors knew it? Are we to expect more of same on our screens for this June‘s 50th Dâ€"Day anniversary? The problem is generational. Hence, maybe insoluble. Latterâ€"day CBC scriptwriters skim old files to simulate reâ€"plays of OUR wartime real life. Who, dare we ask, knows better? They? We? To them, for example, insulated py a halfâ€"century‘s passage of time, Dieppe was folly without purpose. Not so, said Ross Munro, who was there. My old newspapering sidekick spoke out for us greybeards in his classic combat log "Gauntlet to Overlord" (MacMillan 1945): "Without condoning any of the mistakes made," Ross reported, "I‘m convinced that if the raid had not been carried out as a prelude to the North African landings, the combined operations in the Mediterranean and the Normandy invasion, might have been so badly bungled that the war could have been prolonged for years." Who to believe? We oldsters wonder. CBC youngsters coining geeâ€"whiz theatre in their Front Street glass menagerie, or one of us who lived it? Among seniors, CBC‘s "Dieppe" is suspect on two fronts. It‘s upâ€" close combat footage cloys with Hollywood‘s 1930s‘ battle cliches. It‘s longer view role as a landmark in our survival war is a preachy putâ€" down of superâ€"ego Mountbatten, not much else. (Photo by Peter McCusker) _ by CIDA, the Canadian International Development Agency. To raise this money, Larock must increase awareness of Youth Challenge International â€" hence this interview â€"and public speaking at two of his former schools, Appleby College and MacLachlan Preparatory School. "These two schools have just been amazing in helping . me out," says Larock, adding both are raising _ funds for his trip. Larock attended MacLachlan in Grades 6 and 7, and Appleby from Grade 9 to 12. He took Grade 8 at Mentor College in Mississauga, and also went to Babson University in Boston for 1 1/2 years, studying business, before being forced to leave. "My parâ€" ) ents moved back to England, and I decided to stay here." His background includes summer time work at Moorelands Camp for underprivileged innerâ€"city kids from the Janeâ€"Finch area of Toronto, "a really rough neighborhood." While working at this camp, he met people from Youth Challenge International who piqued his interest in similar work abroad. To be accepted , Larock had to pass a selection committee‘s criâ€" teria which included a gruelling threeâ€"day weekend "where you were pushed to your absolute extremes, and observed how you â€behaved and reacted to certain situations." Out of 51 people chosen to participate in this orientation weekend, 25 passed the test. My brother, Alan, flying air cover for RCAF 400 (City of Toronto) Squadron, a jawâ€"clencher baptism of fire over Dieppe‘s ravaged beaches. My neighbor, Marcel Lambert, Calgary Tanks, his Churchill tank lacerated by .88 fire, dragged off to SS captivity. My B.C. friend, Cece Merritt, South Saskatchewans, breasting fearsome Wermacht fire enroute to his VC and PW shackles. Would CBC‘s beach action footage draw their cheers, or jeers? I think I know the answer. Regarding Dieppe‘s longâ€"range context, its reason why, CBC clearâ€" ly missed THE "must" read for young scripters tackling history which their living elders survived. By luck, this winter, our booksellers offer a current reâ€"issue of it. For future TV docudrama scripting, let‘s say, for Dâ€"Day releases come summer, ask for Fernand Braudel‘s landmark "A _ History _ of Civilizations" (Viking Penguin). For this French scholar, you measure history on three scales. First, history "whose passage is almost imperceptible, that of man and his relationship to the environâ€" ment." Second, "another history, this time with slow but perceptible thythm . . .social history, the history of groups and groupings." Third, "the history of events. It is the most exciting of all, the richest in human interest, and also the most dangerous. We must learn to disâ€" trust this history with its burning passions." Over to you, CBC.
