976â€"4321 Good weekend for Sheridan Sheridan College had a productive weekend on the basketball court as they kept their undefeated record intact in regular league play and conâ€" tributed to an allâ€"star victory for their division. Nationallyâ€"ranked Sheridan defeated London‘s Fanshawe College 72â€"62 on Friday night and on Saturday night, Sheridan‘s two allâ€"star representaâ€" tives â€" Andrew Shepherd and Wayne Mulgrave â€" helped the west diviâ€" sion defeat the east division 82â€"78. While it wasn‘t a night for either Shepherd or Mulgrave to light up the scoreboard â€" they had three and one point, respectively â€" they were both contributors to the victory, said the assistant athletic director of host Durham College, Ken Babcock. 3 Friday night, the Bruins were really not threatened in their 72â€"62 victory over Fanshawe. Top scorers were Chris Watson (20), George Frempong (18) and Donovan Brown (10). The Bruins, which sport an undefeated 7â€"0 mark in their division and were sixth in the recent national rankings, are on the road this weekend, playing Windsor‘s St. Clair College Friday night and Sarnia‘s Lambton College on Saturday. Christie gives the boot to K.C. The weather was a lot warmer and Steve Christie‘s boot was a lot hotter as the sizzling Buffalo Bills earned themselves a date this Sunday in their fourth consecutive Super Bowl. With the temperature finally crawling past the freezing mark, the Oakville placeâ€"kicker had no problem finding the uprights every time he was asked. But then again, all of the Bills were carrying out their assignments with peak efficiency as they disposed of the visiting Kansas City Chiefs 30â€"13 in the AFC championship game. Christie was threeâ€"forâ€"three in both the field goal department (23, 25 and 18 yards) and in singleâ€"point touchdown conversions. In the previous week‘s 29â€"23 win over the Los Angeles Raiders â€" in a game played in arctic temperatures â€" Christie blew hot and cold in posting a mirrorâ€"image, twoâ€"andâ€"one record. He was good â€" but also missed â€" two singleâ€"point conversions and a field goal. For the Super Bowl, he definitely won‘t have to worry about the cold â€" just the defending champion Dallas Cowboys. It‘s set for next Sunday, 6 p.m., at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. Oakville schools get untracked Oakville elementary schools carted a lot of hardware back from the annual Spectator Indoor Games held recently at Copps Coliseum in Hamilton. Curlers in town on the weekend Local curlers plan to give a hearty Oakville welcome to visiting rinks during this weekend‘s 28â€"team Sportsman‘s Bonspiel. Although the bonspiel features a high level of competitive curling, with teams coming as far away as Detroit, it‘s the social aspect that provides one of the major attractions. The seven Oakville teams each host three visiting teams for lunch and refreshments. This allows curlers from different clubs to form friendships and to expeâ€" rience some of hospitality. Dean Dart of the St. Georges Curling Club returns to defend his 1993 crown while Harry Carey‘s team will try to repeat in the senior‘s event. "We get over there (to Brampton), and we have a tendency to hear footâ€" steps," said Oakville Blades General manager Murray Walker. "If they‘re out to intimidate us, they‘ve done their job." Despite the 5â€"3 setback to Brampton, it wasn‘t a total lost weekend for the Blades who did manage to put their own big foot down on Friday night with a 7â€"5 win over Streetsville. The weekend split, combined with some unfavorable scores in other league action, dropped Oakville from third place into a twoâ€"way tie for fourth place in the "bunched up" standings. And they have only a handful of games left in which to push themselves back into third or, perhaps, even second place. That task starts Friday night when the Blades host Georgetown at Oakville Arena. Game time is 8 p.m. After that, it‘s off to Hamilton on Saturday and Streetsville next Tuesday before closing out the season the following Friday (Feb. 4) against a lastâ€" place Royal York team that did manage to knock of Brampton during their last encounter. "If you take them (Royal York) for granted, they‘ll beat you," said Walker. Taking Brampton for granted is one thing his own team didn‘t do. On the contrary, he said the Blades may be thinking a little too much about them. Brampton plays "the game of intimidation" and the Blades go into a and home improvements. "We have a lot of team speed and the potential to score some goals, b we need some mental and physical toughness." A bright light over the weekend, he said, was the play of Brent Stril who was called up from the Oakyville midget rep team. "He played very well. He scored a goal Friday night, and didn‘t look o of place at all." In the 5â€"3 loss to Brampton, Chris Chapman led the offence with a go and an assist. The other two goals were scored by Jason Bengert and Go: Kalverda (shorthanded) while assists were also picked up by Jud Richar and Mike Byrne. In the 7â€"5 victory over Streetsville, two players picked up three poin each â€" Matt Interbartolo had two goals and an assist while Jason Slan picked up a goal and two assists.
