by ]ill Bates Margaret Liddon ighting too often is an after- I thought in interior design yet good lighting can transform the appearance and mood of your home. Here are some tips on lighting the various rooms in your home. ENTRANCE HALL: Because you spend so little time in your entrance hall, you may feel that its lighting is not particularly impor- tant. Actually, this room should set the mood for the rest of your house. It is also the place where you greet your guests and make them feel most comfortable. An impressive entrance can be created by high- lighting an interesting architectural feature or a favourite piece of art. Low-level lighting creates a dramat- ic mood and can be directed upwards or downwards, depending upon the features being highlighted. produce attractive shadows on your walls or ceilings. DINING ROOM: The lighting in your dining room should be designed to create a comfortable space in which to dine. Install a tra- ditional chandelier with a dimmer switch, to adjust the light level. Add candlelight to create an intimate mood and flatter your guests. Additional light sources such as wall sconces or floor-sitting uplights should be considered to visually enhance the space around the table. KITCHEN: The main function of lighting in the kitchen is to help you in food preparation. The three main task areas, the stove, the sink and the preparation areas should be well lit. Putting the lights for these areas on separate controls is also a good idea. If you entertain or spend restful family time in your kitchen you should consider the installation of a second more general lighting source, which can be adjusted to a low light level. This lighting can be installed under or above your cup- boards. Adding dimmers can pro- duce a soft ambience. Take advan- tage of reflective surfaces in your one reads, then place the light fix- ture over the centre of the bed. Now it can be directed towards one per- son and, therefore, away from the other. Don’t overlook lighting in the wardrobe closets. In children’s bedrooms, safety is the number one consideration. Lighting, particularly portable and clip-on fixtures, should be kept out of reach. Track lighting is a good choice for a child’sroom, because it adapts easily to the changing needs of growing children. Whatever fixtures you use, light has a considerable effect upon colour. Consider the purchase of a burgundy sofa; only when you bring it home, you find it looks more red in your living room. This change is probably due to your light source. To highlight artwork, track or recessed lighting is best. To wash the wall with light, set the fix- tures no closer than three feet to the wall â€" otherwise a scalloped pattern will appear. Halogen fixtures might also be considered for illuminating your art. Table lamps give a nice ambience. Floor lamps are best for reading or workâ€"related areas. Up- lighting a large plant in a comer can kitchen (overhead hanging copper pots, granite counters, etc.). Directing light onto these glossy surfaces creates sparkle, but turn them off to avoid uncomfortable glare when working there. BEDROOMS: Lighting in the bedroom should be designed to suit the functions of that room. For reading, a good task light should be installed near you. It should be flex- ible to allow for adjustment to pro- vide maximum light, yet avoid glare.
