E 2 e m P e CC Colour direction now By MARGI BILLESDONâ€"KYLE Special to the Beaver ave you ever considered how Hdifferent colours come and go every season, or every few years, and wondered who decides on these colours and where they come from? One of the major influences is the Color Marketing Group, an internaâ€" tional body comprising manufacturâ€" ers in the fields of interiors, fashion, automobiles and cosmetics, that meets twice a year to discuss the current influences that affect colour directions and to predict forecast colours. Today, colour ‘direction‘ has replaced colour ‘trends‘, because we are no longer living in a throwâ€" away society or changing our homes every four to six years. Rather, we are working with what we have and enjoying the challenge. The new colour directions can help us to update our homes without having to replace everything. But before colour can be forecast, we must understand what‘s happenâ€" ing all around us and how people are feeling; what are our concerns. Some of the new buzzwords reflect these things and are the catalyst for some of the current crop of colours â€" words such as ‘earthened‘, ‘wildering‘, ‘the Wild West‘, natural fibres, texture, balance, home craftâ€" ed. Adding to this is the importance of nature, both inside and outside our homes. Living or family rooms are being extended through windows or window treatments that bring the colours of the outdoors in. And in nature, colour is everywhere and everywhere there is colour. Nothing makes a statement faster than colour â€" the right or wrong colour. So use this as a guide to help you put colour into your life. * The red family is making a big return, both in the consumer and contract palette. This is coming from both nature â€" the deep red of autumn replaces colour trends leaves, for example â€" and our reâ€" attraction to the Victorian period. Have you noticed all the deep red cars on the road and really bright red lips in the fashion magazines? Red (or a shade of pink) is also said to be the first real colour a baby sees within a week of birth, and also the colour that seniors, or our grandparâ€" ents, can still pick out well into their old age. * Orange was not seen for a long time, but guess what? It is now back in a big way, but richer, deeper and giving a sunbaked, feeling â€" a freshâ€" ing warm colour that can be used in small amounts. * Yellow is another colour that is being seen all over and is changing from clear bright to the softer shades as well as French mustard colours and the richer, deeper spice tones and nature‘s outdoors such as goldâ€" en rod and autumn‘s changing leaves. * Green â€" so strongly associated with nature and the environment â€" is showing up everywhere. Teal green is very strong now in linens and housewares. We‘re still seeing a lot of yellowed greens â€" but I won‘t use the word avocado! The 1996 conâ€" tract colour forecast calls for softer, clearer greens; indeed, clearer colours in general are forecast for the new colour directions. * Blue is going from the denim look to a very clear, bright blue, almost electric in feeling. Sky blue is something we can all bring into our homes this winter. * Purple is going to a deeper tone, leaning towards the red family. And what about brown? It, too, has joined purple and gone towards the red family in much darker shades. Black also will have a reddish cast in it, while white is becoming less ‘stark‘ as the tinted varieties give it a more natural look. Choosing the colour for any room is the most difficult decision a decorator must make. ® When selecting a colour one must first choose a hue â€" or a position in the spectrum of visible reflected light which we call colour. A decorator can pick from Primary colours (red, yellow or blue), Secondary colours (orange, green or violet), or a combination of primary and secondary colours, known as Tertiary colours (blueâ€"green, yellowâ€"orange, stc.) Once a hue has been chosen, a decorator must consider the value and intensitp of the colour. Value can be taken to mean the lightness or darkness of the colour. The intensity is a relative measure of the purity of a colour. Colour choice is further complicated by the existence of other colour sources in the bathroom â€" fixtures, flooring and wall tiles. Which brings on the discussion of colour schemes â€" related or contrasting. Related colour schemes tend to add size to a room and can be used to hide ugly architecture. Contrasting colour combinations are generally more bold and will highlight a feature or area of a room. It is quickly becoming apparent that choosing a colour for a room can be a very complex decision. If a homeowner is struggling with a colour decision, a professional painting contractor will be able to offer counselling on colour schemes or recommend â€"an interior decorator. As to the bathroom colour conundrum, try looking to the pink hues. Pink in a bathroom with give its occupants a healthy, rosy complexion. Pink is also a warm, high energy colour which can give a feelin? of vitality. A short visit to a pink bathroom will give a person a quick burst of energy and a feeling of improved health. Now, which pink to choose... Certa ProPainter$ For a Free Estimate 245â€"3508 David Wilkins Serving Oakville since 1986 ...... Thursday 10â€"6 Friday 10â€"8 Saturday 10â€"5 OVER ONE MILLION SOLD!! CENTRAL VACUUM #What are the advantages of a central vacuum system? I \ m The convenience, quality and performance of Beam central vacuum systems have made us Canada‘s #1 choice. If you‘re currently using a portable vacuum, you‘re pulling around a lot of dead weight and you‘re recirculating dust back into the air. With a Beam, your home will be cleaner and m)ur carpets will wear longer for less an the cost of many portables. A Beam central vacuum system is not only more powerful than ordinary portable vacuum cleaners but it is more effective in removing dust, dirt and polien from your living area. This is ideal for those suffering from asthma, other allergies or respiratory diseases. While vacuuming with a portable, a portion of whatever is removed from your carpet and floors can be redistributed back into the room through the paper filter and exhaust system. Vacuuming is easier and healthier with a Beam because there is nothing to lug around and our motor and dust canister are situated away from your living area in the garage, basement or a closet... therefore your living environment stays cleaner and dustâ€"free. In addition, the installation of a Beam central vacuum system takes a few hours in new homes, older homes and condominiums. It‘s easy to install yourself or you can have our trained service representatives do it for you. In either case, there‘s no mess and if you move, you can also take your Beam central vacuum with you. o|BEAM 1064 South Service Rd. BLINDS Oakvile PICK UP YOUR FREE MEASURING GUIDE CARPET CLEANING ® Are there any risks involved if I decide to clean my carpets myself? A professional cleaning service has the equipment and knowâ€"how to do the job better than a doâ€"itâ€"yourâ€" # selfer. In fact, using them wrong chemicals in a mistaken attempt to clean g_arpets can do more harm than if you left them irty. Homeowners should look for professional carpet cleaners who use only high temperature steam to clean carpets. Soap and shampoo can leave a sticky residue that will leave carpets looking dirtier than ever in a short time. In fact, it could take as many as three to four professional cleanings to undo the damage to an improperly cleaned carpet. Carpet and fabric surfaces provide excellent breeding grounds for microbial colonies, dust mites and their remains. The patented, heatâ€" controlled Steamatic process cleans carpeting by using 165 degree temperature at the surface that kills or stuns dust mites and other microâ€" organisms. Our portable Steamatic cleaning process can reduce the level of bacteria on upholstered furniture by an average of 96%. This process effectively removes soil, dust and dirt and eliminates smoke and musty odors that can have a dramatic impact on indoor air quality. Consumers should watch for carpet cleaning companies whose prices appear low, but then increase the price with loads of "extras." in many cases these "extras" are unnecessary. Steam cleaning can also put some extra life back into your furniture. But be aware of efforts to clean cotton chintz. This fabric is difficult to clean, especially if it has been yellowed by tobacco smoke or faded from the sun.
