Booth started working at Ryerson in 1986, teaching in the Nursing Program and gradually becoming more and more involved in Con. Ed. under the leadership of former Supported by: "I wouldn‘t want it any other way. There is always this sense of openâ€" ness in Con. Ed. â€" to new ideas and new programs. We are the doorway to the world. I feel very lucky." And there are plenty of problems to solve, she laughed. Continuing Education is a booming business at the newly anointed "University." With 45,000 registrations last year in her division, 500 faculty, and 40 fullâ€"time staff, Booth called it "chaotic â€" but wonderful." Her own expeâ€" riences as a child growing up in the Toronto area, but constantly on the move, and attending 13 different schools in 13 years, attest to her Booth shared many of his dreams for Con. The short answer is not really. Like any sensiâ€" So, the first couple of months on the job at Ryerson fullâ€"time were a bit rugged, she admitted, as guilt reared its ugly head. "My mother was a traditional, stayâ€"atâ€"home mom with dinner on the table every night at six," she explained. "There is a lot of that traâ€" ditional mom in me." Finding the balance between parâ€" enting and career fulfillment has not always been easy, the Dean said, particularly in the past four years as a single parent. No question, it has been a stretch. x in Community Health as a superviâ€" sor with the Halton: Region Health Department, teaching preâ€"natal classes at Sheridan College, and teaching nursing at both McMaster and U. of T. were all partâ€"time posiâ€" tions. Her family got first dibs. Looking relaxed and confident, Booth waxed rhapsodic about increasing the "accessibility" of programs, maintaining "quality," and establishing high levels of "service." She hauls out all the buzz words of the ©90s, but wraps them in human terms. At the end of the day, it all comes down to ‘balance,‘ however â€" balanced budget, balanced program selecâ€" tion, balanced life. As a mom, nurse, teacher, and administrator, Marilynn knows this only too well. After eight months in the job, the universe continues to unfold as it should. After nine hours (in two separate interviews) of testing her mettle, the selection committee opted for Nurse Marilynn, about the â€"furthest remove from "A squareâ€"headed beanâ€"counter" as anyone can imagâ€" ine. "There were about 75 applicants," she recalled. "I didn‘t even know if I‘d get an interview. But I was terriâ€" fied they were going to come up with this squareâ€"headed beanâ€" counter... for the job." (Such colorâ€" ful language!) So when the Dean‘s job came open last year, Booth was anxious, if not to throw her hat into the ring exactâ€" ly, at least to get her 15 minutes of fame by filling the ears of the 12â€" member search committee with her views on learninge. Perhaps, the biggest feather in her cap, however, was as writer/creator of Ryerson‘s 4â€"year Degree Program in Midwifery, a project she did counterparts from McMaster and Laurentian â€" a rare exercise in institutional coâ€"operaâ€" tion. "A very positive experience," she said, "and it certainly opened doors for me." Not unlike their mother. Booth‘s selection as one of six Deans at the University, was surprising to many considering she has no Ph.D. nor had she reached Director‘s level in the pecking order. Booth had raised her profile by traveling extensively, giving Continuing Education coursâ€" es in nursing in Hong Kong, Mexico, and Bolivia in recent years. With an abiding interest in materâ€" nalâ€"child services, as well as educaâ€" tion, she was an effective spokesperson for her profession and the school. She claims these trips broadened both her sensitivity and perspective. "My kids are very responsible and independent," Booth said. "They‘re amazing really." ble delegator, she hired a houseâ€" keeper to manage the house two days a week and reserves most weekends and evenings for her famâ€"
