According to Steve Beatty, Halton‘s Emergency Planning Coâ€"ordinator, an emergency exercise at the regional level has not been held for about five years. In response to concerns raised about this gap in preâ€" paredness training by a number of people, including regional chief Administrative officer John Burke, it was decided the field exercise would be held. The reason we know this already is that area fire departâ€" ments, together with related emergency services, have planned to conduct Exercise Dakota on that date â€" complete with mock casualties, evacuaâ€" tion centres and much more. More specifically, the exerâ€" cise will take place on the Shell Lands approximately 500 m north of New Street on the east side of Burloak Drive in Oakville. Emergency personnel will then converge on the scene. n Thursday, May 12th the Shell Lands on Burloak Drive will be the scene of a major disaster. Ted Guest, deputy chief of the Oakville Fire Department, explained the town will be a "major participant" in Exercise Dakota, requiring the involveâ€" ment of the Town of Oakville Control and Support Groups, Citizen Inquiry Services and the Oakville Fire and Public Works Departments. According to Burke, Dakota is ~designed to test the Emergency Plan for the Region of Halton while allowing indiâ€" vidual agencies to gauge their own emergency procedures. Beatty says exercise should take an entire business day with setâ€" up taking place in the morning. Dakota should wrap up at approximately 3:30 p.m. By HOWARD MOZEL Oakville Beaver Staff Emergency crew prepare for disaster May 12th HOP ON IN FOR A Call in advance for special orders.
