By DIANE HART Special to the Beaver . Hospital will operate own pharmacy akville Trafalgar O Memorial Hospital wants to sell its own drugs. At Tuesday‘s OTMH Board of Governors meeting, board memâ€" bers agreed to have their own charitable corporation get into the lucrative drug store business by operating its own expanded pharâ€" macy instead of going to tender with it. A few years ago, they talked with area pharmacies about the oneâ€"year pilot project which began in 1993 and the possibility of going to tender with it. But Tuesday, the board expressed its desire to run the expanded drug store as a sucâ€" cessful business venture. Board members stressed that hospital representatives will meet with area pharmacies personally to explain the reasons behind the move not to tender the project, folâ€" lowing the completion of the oneâ€" year pilot project at OTMH. In 1992, all community pharâ€" macies received a letter from OTMH detailing their wish to establish a drug store for a oneâ€" year pilot project and the probabilâ€" ity of a tender in the future. The advantages of operating the drug store by the hospital include: convenience for staff, patients, and physicians; fostering health proâ€" motion and wellness through counâ€" seling; providing improved patient care, particularly for elderly and psychiatric patients; offering qualiâ€" ty control and services; aligning inventory with the auxiliary and Chuise*. Pilot project pays off their own gift shop operations; and controlling their own merchandise ranges. By operating their own pharmaâ€" cy, the hospital would also be doing the best it can for the comâ€" munity by maximizing any profits on a business venture. Board members commented that in all likelihood, the larger chains would submit the most competitive tenders, rather than local pharmacies. As well, should the hospital win the competition, there could be accusations of a "ricced" bid. All of this, they decided, could be avoided by not going to tender with the project.
