As a result of its investigaâ€" tion into the Fitzpatrick tragedy, â€" the |_ provincial Office of the Chief Coroner | issued a recomâ€" |, mendation on March 17th to all owner/operâ€" Jim Clelland ators of multiple skimmer pools with equalizer fittings that the devices be rendered inoperable. 5;': 5 r FINL s§ + Heavy Gauge Stainiess Broil King Full Coverage for Even Heat Distribution Broil King. 50,000 BTU‘s Great for Searing Power When You Equalizer fittings are secondary openings situated about 10 inches beneath the main skimmers which are set near the surface of a pool. In the event of low water levels, these backâ€"up valves open to draw in water and prevent air from being sucked in and causing pump problems. At only three inches wide, Clelland explained, these valves possess a strong suction power. Why this engaged while Cristin was swimming is a puzzle, he says. "The Coroner‘s advance request was certainly quite in 3 5 order," he said. Within hours of receiving the notice, says Clelland, plumbers were dispatched to the two pools to install rubber seals inside the skimmer boxes. Notices were also posted in the facilities. The Town‘s other pair of pools â€" Centennial and Glen Abbey â€" have a different kind of filtration sysâ€" tem and did not require alterâ€" ations. As a temporary solution to comply with the Coroner‘s request, plumbers sealed off the second pipe inside the skimmer box. "I think it was a very freakish kind of accident," said Clelland. "Most strongly suspect the fittings caused problems." Clelland admitted it was an unusual step to ask pool owners to disable the fittings prior to a coroâ€" ner‘s inquest, but agreed that it was a prudent move. The Fitzpatrick accident is a first for the Variety Village pool, which has been open for over four years and is used by more than 1,500 people each week. An inquest into the death of Cristin Fitzpatrick will be schedâ€" uled in the future.
