REGIS 10:00 a.m 2310 E fl WE O Juniors FULL 51 JUNIOR SINGLE _ FAMILY COME For mor . C €3 \ . . _ In the end Oakville, which lost the game 6â€"1, couldn‘t overcome some bad timing. Unlike Sudbury, which had wrapped up its Northern Ontario champiâ€" onship two days before the Air Canada régional Ontario cup got underway in Ottawa, Oakville had been waiting in the wings for two and a half weeks after defeating Oshawa on March 19 to take the Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA) title in three straight. The wait, said Majander, "was way too long." The one thing both teams had in common at that point of the tournament is that neither had managed to defeat Wexford or Kitchener in the prelimiâ€" nary round. Oakville‘s tripleâ€"A midget hockey team came much closer to going to Brandon, Manitoba for the Air Canada Cup then their lessâ€"thanâ€" exemplary 2â€"4 record at the allâ€"Ontario championships would indicate, said coach Al Majander. It all boiled down to their sixth and final preliminary game Saturday afternoon against Sudbury, the Northern Ontario champions. Despite the disappointing 2â€"3 record to that point, a win would still have sent Oakville‘s Maple Leaf Foods Rangers on to the medal round and knocked Sudbury out. The most immediate timing problem was that Sudbury happened to have the extra two hours rest before the day‘s second game. And the extra rest "certainly was evident" as Sudbury came out in a hurry and scored three quick goals in the first period, said Majander. Brian Bendig scored Oakville‘s lone goal with assists to Andy Devlin and Darryl Curtis. The other timing problem, on the other hand, happened long before the tournament even started. And that‘s exactly what Sudbury went on to do, thus earning a trip to the Air Canada Cup in Brandon, Manitoba from April 19â€"24. Majander figures his team could have posted similar upsets in the playâ€" off round. SCOREBOARD , Thursday: Oakville 4, Rideauâ€"St. Lawrence Kings 2; Wexford Raiders 6, Oakville 3. For this reason he was happy with his team‘s performance and said it should set them up well for their own divisional championship next weekend in Kitchener. Seeded second behind the juvenile team at least weekend‘s provi championship was the junior team, and coach Regg Miller said the sequent third place finish was "pretty disappointing. We weren‘t i speed." Now, the only way the junior team can join the other two On teams at the national championships, which begin in Kingston at the of the month, is as a lastâ€"minute replacement for any noâ€"shows. Before dropping the semiâ€"final match to London, the junior tean been in complete control, easily winning its quarterâ€"final match and dropping one game throughout all of the preliminary round. For Oakville‘s powerhouse West Side volleyball club, their hopes for a shot at a Canadian championship now rest with one team. The juvenile team will try to handle the pressure of being the number one ranked team at this weekend‘s Ontario championship in Kitchener. That‘s not as brash as it seems as the juvenile team, in fact, was actually the top rated team going into the junior championship. But even prior to the tournaâ€" ment, coach John Burt had cauâ€" tioned that the number one rankâ€" ing for the younger kids was a bit misleading since many of the other junior clubs‘ university playâ€" ers, missing for most of the seaâ€" son, were now back in the fold.
