Locals strike gold at nationals However, even more satisfying for Mike Morningstar, who operates his own Tae Kwonâ€"Do school in Oakville, was having a sizeable contingent of students competing with him at the national championships which attracted about 1,000 competitors to Regina last weekend. For the sixth straight year, an Oakville Tae Kwonâ€"Do instructor has struck gold at the national championships. His seven students also performed admirably, bringing back three silvers and two gold medals. The best weekend may may have been recorded by 18â€" yearâ€"old Kristina Makxam who won a gold in the sparring category and a silver in the patterns category. She was competing in the 18â€"andâ€"over, blue stripe catâ€" egory (next is blue, red stripe, red, black stripe, black first degree, second degree and third degree). She was also joined at the competition by her 14â€"yearâ€" old brother, Richard, who didn‘t place in his category. The rest of medals were brought home by a trio of brothers, led by the youngest one â€" 16â€"yearâ€"old Chris Maltar â€" who won a gold medal in the patterns category. He was competing in the blue stripe category for 16â€"18 year olds. Dave Maltar, 19, won a silver in the sparring category while Dan Maltar, 21, won a silver in patterns. Both were competing in first degree black belt. Other competitors included Dion Markettos, 19, and Errico Lucia, 19. The Oakville school also contributed four members â€" Dan Maltar, Errico Lucia, Dion Markettos and Hwang Suil (visiting on an exchange from Japan, he was ineligiâ€" Mike Morningstar ble to compete in the individual competition) â€" to the sixâ€"member provincial team which finished second in Canada. The team, which is coached by Morningstar, picked up a silver in sparring and a bronze in patterns. Morningstar, who has a third degree black belt, picked up his sixth straight gold in the patterns category and that qualifies him for the individual competition at the world championships which are being held in Malaysia in July. Along with Markettos. the Tae Kwonâ€"Do instructor had already earned a berth on Canada‘s team entry to that competition. Hole in one wins a million Morningstar: who will soon leave the competitive aspect behind when he achieves his fourth degree black belt, has also been invited to represent Canada at the prestigious Allâ€"Japan Cup competition in May in the patterns and sparring category. The local Jlung association has found a nifty way to get the attention of local eolfers â€" and it isn‘t with a ‘fore!‘ It‘s with a holeâ€"inâ€"one competition in which golfers can take a shot at a million dollar target inside Oakville‘s Sportdomes. A coâ€"operative fundraising venture among three lung associations â€" Halton, Peel and Yorkâ€"Metro â€" local golfing buffs can show up with their favorite clubs anytime between April 25â€"30 (Monday. to Saturday), 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The semiâ€"finals and finals will be held on Sunday, May 1. The official rules will be unveiled at a press conference this Wednesday. Between 200 and 300 people should be able to make it to Sunday‘s semiâ€"finals, said Halton Lung Association executive director Liz Porter. There, they‘ll get another shot at the tee, which will be pushed back to 70 yards, and the 20 closest to the hole will get a chance in the final, millionâ€"dollar round. Any one who beats the odds and bags a holeâ€"inâ€"one "on the fly" will win. AND RECREATION | ._ CGall 842â€"5555 or 257â€"0656 > to register now!
