Inc Astronaut presents Blue Planet Award By WILMA BLOKHUIS Focus Editor The IMAX film ‘Blue Planet‘ held 700 students from 13 elementary schools across Halton spellbound as they gazed as pictures of a blue and turquoise planet dotted with wispy clouds as seen from space; larger â€"thanâ€" life scenes of plant life in the Amazon rainforest and animal life in Africa, sand formations in the desert, volcanoes susâ€" taining life at the bottom of the ocean, and a large chunk of ice falling from a glacier in Alaska. The students trembled in fear as Hurricane Hugo ravaged the Eastern Seaboard, witnessed the damage caused by the San Francisco earthquake of 1989,and gasped at the thickness of the smog choking Los Angeles. ‘Blue Planet‘ combines real life filmed around the world with breathtakâ€" ing views from space filmed by 35 astronauts on five missions. The earth is the only planet in the solar system capable of sustaining life, said the film, stressing that the earth‘s delicate balance of air, water, plant, aniâ€" mal and human must be maintained for survival. Screened at the Ontario Place Cinesphere for Monday‘s annual Blue Planet Awards â€" obviously named after this film â€" the youthful audience was equally attentive to a shorter movie of a Burlington family who have, through recycling, composting, and using cloth instead of paper towels and taking their own bags to the store when shopping, been able to reduce their garbage output to less than one can per month. Dr. Roberta Bondar autographs an Earth Day poster at thes Blue Planet Awards at Ontario Place Cinesphere. sen. Today, Bondar stands out as Canada‘s most revered and honored astronaut, having accepted numerous awards including an Order of Canada. She holds five degrees, and has certifiâ€" cates in scuba diving, parachuting and a private pilot‘s license. She flew aboard the Discovery on an international scienâ€" tific research mission, doing 55 experiâ€" ments for 14 countries, Jan. 22 to 30, 1992. (Photo by Peter McCusker) Earth Day.
