"I didn‘t want to leave because I loved working there so much," said Volunteers honored for work in communi Pomeroy appeared in court Monday, although the judge had earlier granted permission for him to be absent. His lawyer William MacDonald had told the court April 8th that Pomeroy was under stress and that a doctor advised him not to attend. MacDonald apologized to the court Monday and said there had been a misunderstanding. It will be June 29th before a judge will determine if Halton Regional Chairman Peter Pomeroy will stand trial on corruption charges. The preliminary hearing wrapped up in a Burlington courtroom Monday morning following the closing arguments from crown prosecutors and defence lawyers representing Pomeroy and three others charged. The hearing began March 18th in Oakville provincial court and continued over eight days during the past month. At the outset, Judge William Sharpe imposed a publication ban on any eviâ€" dence presented during the hearing. Pomeroy is charged with three counts of breach of trust, and accepting a secret commission. Halton Hills builder and developer Ab Tennant and Pomeroy‘s wife, Pat Crimmins, the deputy clerk for Halton Region, are both charged with giving a secret commission. Halton Hills lawyer Herb Amnold is charged with giving a secret commission and breach of trust. Pomeroy and the three coâ€"accused were charged last spring, following a twoâ€" year jointâ€"forces police investigation dubbed Project 80. He has continued in his role as Halton Regional chairman throughout the time since the charges were laid, and has held the position since 1983.
