Dylan Neal thought Hollywood would chew him up and spit him out. Instead, Tinseland offered him a part in one of today‘s hottest soaps. The part, and coinciding threeâ€" year contract, released an incredible burden from the young actor‘s shoulâ€" ders. Although only in his early 20‘s, Neal has been pounding the paveâ€" ment for many years both in Toronto and LA. He‘s taken a myriad of jobs to ‘support‘ his acting dream, his car is "literally falling apart" and he‘s slept on more than his share of floors. At one point, after an excruciâ€" atingly difficult six months in LA, he packed up what was left of his selfâ€" esteem, and brought his monoâ€" racked body home to Oakville. "I felt comfortable," says Neal of his screentest. "Maybe it was because it was my sixth screentest for a soap in just over a year. I had an inner calm." Neal â€" who has been told he has a ‘soap look‘ â€" portrays Shaw, a first year UCLA student majoring in International Marketing and Art, attending school on a baseball scholâ€" arship. His debut scene will be with Eric Forrester as he applies for a job with the mega Forrester empire. The 1994 Challenge National Finals will be a huge karaokeâ€"fest hosted by Toronto radio station Mix 99.9 FM‘s morning team, Carla Collins and Larry Fedoruk. Regional winners will compete for up to $5,000 in cash, Pioneer Home Laser karaoke systems and the title of 1994 Great Canadian Karaoke Challenge Champion. Warm up those vocal chords because the Great Canadian Karaoke Challenge is underway. The third annual vocalâ€"talent search is taking place in more than 100 locations across Canada â€" including The Brickhouse on Maplegrove Road â€" with each location holding eight weekly contests. Using the technological magic of karaoke, amateur singers compete for weekly prizes including Tâ€"shirts, jackets, Pioneer CD players, complete home laser karaoke systems and hundreds of dollars in Granada dollars. The best singer from each location will move on to compete in the Regional Finals, to be held May 27th in Toronto and the winners there, will go on to the National finals June 5th. Karaoke challenge underway Under contract with the soap opera, Neal is unable to touch any other projects and with taping conâ€" suming just a few days per week, he will have time to devote to some of his more serene pastimes like pet portraits and furniture building.
