That‘s a mere 000 more than last year‘s goal ich unfortunately wasn‘t reached ter the total contributions of $97,000 re tallied. But awn Samuels, Oakville‘s Red Shield oâ€"ordinator, says there‘s still time to list more â€" perhaps even enough reach the 1,000â€"volunteer goal she pes for. As well, "five or six" service clubs Oakville have come on stream and e willing to canvass, compared to y two last year. Besides this, the campaign has en streamlined in recent years with nvassing kits put together in ronto instead of by local volunteers. The evening will be a busy one for e volunteers. Although many of iem will spend only an hour canvassâ€" ig their neighbors, others will work te into the night depositing and proâ€" »ssing the contributions. In the first three months of this year, Samuels said an average of 150 needy families each month received assistance from the Oakville Salvation Army. They received food vouchers, clothes for their children and whatever else the Army could provide to meet their needs. "There‘s a lot going on in Oakville that people aren‘t aware of," said Beth Stainton who, for the past eight years, has been involved with the Salvation Army and is currently on her fifth year as residential chairperson for the Oakville area. Stainton has always been impressed by the only agency that "gives without asking why." She will always poignantly remember the young man who told her how the Salvation Army arranged for him to visit his dying mother in Toronto when he hadn‘t the money to travel from Barrie to see her. "They (workers) go out in a van to bring coffee, soup and friendship to people on the streets," she said. "They‘re not pushing religion. They just want to help." But she is uplifted by the Army‘s efforts to get kids in Toronto off its streets and into a better, more fulfillâ€" ing life.
