Project: birdhouse Builders: 26 artists and architects and interior designers Result: madly different, delightful works of art Whimsical and wonderful... the sheer variety of birdhouses now dotâ€" ting the interior of Gairloch Gallery is a feast for the eyes. Oakville Galleries staff are busy setting up the 26 birdhouses created as a fundraising project for the Plumage and Song gala, and silent auction tomorrow at Gairloch Gallery. Andalthough there is no official public exhibition of the birdhouses, created by wellâ€"known artists and architects, they are available for viewâ€" ing during installation at Gairloch today. Madly different, delightful works of art For two creative local people, the project was a chance to exhibit their own creativity and have some fun at the same time. All artists and designâ€" ers donated the birdhouses to the gallery in return for a tax credit for the price of the auctioned work. By DIANE HART Special to the Beaver "We‘ve worked tosether on other Violinist Jose Peleg takes you on a journey of the Best Of Beethoven For tickets please call _ (905) $15â€"2021 projects of course," says local archiâ€" tect, Don Kerr, who designed a fourâ€" plex birdhous completewith "swimâ€" ming pool" with his wife, Christine, an interior designer. He is absolutely delighted with the range of works of arts, from their own colorful, tongueâ€"inâ€"cheek house for the discerning bird (which comes with architectural drawings and a personal letter) to another local architect, Gren Weiss‘ larger birdhouse made out of a recycled sewer pipe. Other contributors are artists such as Stephen Andrews who made a clay birdhouse with a handâ€"thatched roof; Kim Adams with his fourâ€"forâ€"theâ€" priceâ€"ofâ€"one birdhouse on wheels; FASTWURMS®‘ earthy looking birdâ€" house, and a host of other artworks from Spring Hurlbut, Cecilia Varga, Robert Wiens, and Petra de Mooy. Some are instructors and graduates of Sheridan College, while others work in Oakville as professional architects and designer. According to Marlene Klassen, of Oakville Galleries, all entered into the spirit of the thing with enthusiasm. "There was real research into what types of birds would like what kinds of places in which to live," she says. Klassen adds they expect the upcoming auction to be a resounding success given the superb calibre of the work and the fact birdhouses are a hot collectible at the moment. "When we originally thought of the idea, it wasn‘t with the idea of a public exhibit. Our exhibition schedâ€" ule is so tight, we didn‘t consider it. But then when they (the birdhouses) started to come in, we thought it was such a shame not to do an exhibition," she says. Galleries staff are also busy providâ€" ing a few witty, deft touches to go along with the major sponsors â€" Royal LePage Real Estate Services and Ralph McCormick and Associates. Along with the theme of real estate, they are making ‘For Sale® signs, placâ€" ing Open House signs and the like, all in the spirit of fun and frivolity. She acknowledged that it was unfortunate there is no public exhibit of the works. Next year, she promised, it will be arranged in a different manâ€" ner. But although the birdhouses were made with fun in mind, many are functional as well, she notes. THE PAPER (AA) (Dolby Stereo). Evgs. 7:00 Sat. Sun. Mat. 215. PHREESOME (R) (Dolby Stereo). A neat touch to their own proâ€" ject is the fact it was built by a friend Garth McGeary â€" a structural engineer with the Tiny Perfect Space Company. Functional and fun are the words that best describe the birdhouses up for auction tomorrow evening during Oakville Galleries‘ unique Plumage and Song Gala and Silent Auction. "It was designed completely on a computer, from the perspective, the color, and everything. We looked at it, and said, That‘s it," he says. All the work was done from their home office on Randall Street. Kerr says not all art has to be as intensely serious as some that is exhibited. Their uniquely designed home on the banks of Sixteen Mile creek was the perfect place, they felt, in which to design a birdhouse. From their own vantage point overlooking the river, they see a variety of birds at their own birdhouses. "We wanted something whimsical with a bit of fun to it, but functional," Christine adds.
