"Traditionally police departments everywhere have policed their commuâ€" nity from the police perspective, reacâ€" tively. What community policing does is give us a chance to interact with the community and get input from the comâ€" munity â€" about their concerns. Community policing, basically, is the police and community working togethâ€" er," said Halton Regional Police Crime Prevention Supervisor Sgt. Joe Prasad. The concept doesn‘t replace tradiâ€" tional reactive policing but it attempts to address crime preventatively and proacâ€" tively. Community policing, said Prasad, is both a philosophy and an organizational strategy that allows the police and comâ€" munity to work closely together in new ways to solve crime, fear of crime, physâ€" ical and social disorder and neighborâ€" hood decay. Police Service‘s best kept secrets â€" ut ironically, it‘s one they‘ve been clamoring to tell. Community policing. It‘s the concept of specific police officers and neighborhoods working together to address neighborhood conâ€" cerns. It‘s a concept that allows the comâ€" munity to inform police about concerns and once that happens, police have a host of resources â€" both personnel and specific programs â€" they can use to address the problem. Lmay be one of the Halton Regional The community policing concept, however, can only work by breaking down apathy and get the community involved, to work. "Neighborhood _ residents who address and solve their own problems are significantly more effective than those who refer their problems to other agencies," said Prasad. Community policing isn‘t new. It began throughout Halton in 1990. In Oakville, the town was divided into eight communities based on existâ€" ing "neighborhoods" or areas. Oakville‘s _ eight _ Community Policing communities include: It also calls for police and people to be free to explore creative ways of addressing neighborhood concerns beyond the narrow focus on individual crime incidents. The shift to community policing, however, does mean a slower response time for nonâ€"emergency calls, with citiâ€" zens themselves asked to handle more of their minor concerns. "The philosophy rests on the belief that law abiding people in the communiâ€" ty deserve input into the police process in exchange for their participation and support," said Prasad.
