The spring rains have made the grass lush and green for another summer. The flowers, ovingly planted, are in bloom. The sunroom is bright and sunny. It‘s Norah Collins‘ favorite spot. The love seat pulled into a bed More volunteers are welcome. The ALS Society requires about 100 volunteers to sell cornflowers on ALS Flower Days on June 3rd and 4th. The ALS Society has sold cornflowers as a fundraiser since 1985, and in 1990, jumped at an opportunity to have June declared as ALS Awareness Month. Lou Gehrig â€" ALS is frequentâ€" ly referred to as Lou Gehrig‘s Disease â€" first baseâ€" man for the New York Yankees, had retired from baseball in June, and died of ALS in 1941, also in June. And, the ALS Society has always sold its cornflowers in June. This year, the ALS Society of Ontario hopes to raise $200,000 from cornflower sales across the province. In 1989, cornflower sales raised $60,000, and that amount was doubled in 1990 to $120,000. CCPAC "Simply" Accounting ACCPAC Plus All money raised from the sale of cornflowers goes to research. Pillows support her head and back. Norah Collins, 72, has amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, better known as ALS or Lou Gehrig‘s Disease, in memory of the famous New York Yankees first baseâ€" man who died of the disease in 1941. The disease has robbed Norah of her ability to speak, swallow, and the ability to walk on her own. _ However, it‘s done nothing to the sharpness of her mind, her sense of humor and her love for the Toronto Blue Jays. "She‘s been a diehard fan of the Jays since they started (in 1977)," said Len, 73, her husband of nearly 52 years â€" they celebrate their wedding anniversary on June 6th. "She‘s never missed a game. It doesn‘t matter if they‘re losing 10 to 0! She‘s just crazy for baseball." Norah was diagnosed with ALS in February 1993, but had not been well for two years previous. "By that time, the ALS has progressed to where she began havâ€" ing speech trouble, and trouble swallowing. "Last summer she started having more difficulty swallowing, and she wasn‘t getting proper nutrition. She was choking and we feared food was being aspiâ€" rated into her lungs." Since September, she been fed a nutritionally balâ€" anced liquid diet directly through a feeding tube into her stomach. The IV pole used for her feeding, and the suction pump to clear her lungs are courtesy of the Muscular Dystrophy (MD) Association, which makes some equipment available to ALS patients, because the two diseases are similar or related. And, she‘s learned to communicate using a voice synthesizer she received from the Ontario ALS Society last November â€" she is one of 24 ALS patients to have such a device. Norah types what she wants to say with her left hand, and a ‘voice‘ inside of the machine speaks. Norah is in good spirits, and considers herself lucky to the support of her family, good friends, and the local ALS chapter which brought her a ‘riser chair,‘ a specially equipped recliner that can lift Norah into a upright position at the press of a button. "She‘s the one who keeps us going," says daughter Julie McLaughlin. It is not known how Norah got stricken with ALS, (See ‘Home support services .. .‘ page 12) Directory ........... Advertising.
