t was the beginning of an enture not just for three young sians, but for a curious student ulation at the private Lakeshore d school. Their arrival signified fruition of intense efforts by leby to open up communication educational channels between two countries separated for ny years by the Cold War. The exchange had humble beginâ€" igs in 1990 after the collapse of t Berlin Wall and communism. pleby Economics instructor Eis Shannon, who initiated the hange program, says students ticipating in an international airs conference felt the best way understand the changing scene in issia was to bring Russian stuâ€" nts here. The department of ternal Affairs told them the red pe would be horrendous so pleby opted for private channels. ght students and three teachers ived in 1990 staying for almost ee weeks. "It was the first large scale issian exchange in the country," d Shannon. Appleby students returned to St. tersburg in 1991 and in the fall of )91 yet another small group of issian students came to Appleby. The latest exchange is a scholarâ€" ip program, a product of the nadaâ€"CIS (Gorbachev undation), paid for by Husky jection Moldings of Bolton with pleby supplying room and board. itially only one Russian student as to attend Appleby but enough oney was found to sponsor three id it is hoped that, through the undation, more than 50 Russian |udents will be coming to Canada ver the next two years, not all, owever, to attend Appleby. One of the students, 21â€"yearâ€"old eter Yankov had three years of niversity physics behind him fore being offered the Foundation ‘holarship which meant returning ) high school for a year. Yankov id he had thought about studying broad for a year to gain insight ito different cultures. The decision ) lengthen his studies abroad was a ifficult one, but it has been a "very sitive experience." Shannon says in future xchanges, no student with more 1an one year of university will be ccepted, however, in Yankov‘s ase his "maturity" provided a aluable resource for younger stuâ€" ents with whom he shared resiâ€" ence. This fall, Yankov leaves the conâ€" ines of the beautiful Appleby rounds for The University of Vaterloo where he will study engineering. Sixteenâ€"yearâ€"old Igor Rosenberg ill also study mechanical engiâ€" ieering, but he will attend AcMaster University. â€""It‘s a great opportunity for the yture," said Rosenberg. "Due to the :onomic and political problems, ou can‘t guess what‘s happening ie next day. We‘re looking for staâ€" ility, especially my parents. They nt me to be a little bit different m them." Helen Appel, a 21â€"yearâ€"old with year of university behind her in hysics and chemistry, _ has witched her focus from the sciâ€" ‘nces to the food industry, choosing ussian students art of exchange tarted by Appleby KATHY YANCHUS ville Beaver Staff hey arrived in the middle of night after an exhausting Aeroflot flight from Moscow and a tiring bus journey from Montreal. Picked up in Scarborough, the weary travellers were driven to the private grounds of Appleby College where they would spend the next year of their lives. to attend Guelph University‘s Hotel and Food Management program this fall. (Yankov and Rosenberg‘s uniâ€" versity tuition will be paid for by Husky, for whom the boys work in the summer months, while Appel‘s tuition will be provided by a Foundation scholarship) "It may not be realistic, but what I want to do is open a restaurant or resort for tourists in remote part of Russia," said Helen, a prospect that intrigues Shannon who believes Helen has "hooked into" an evolvâ€" ing industry in her native land. Aside from studies which have occupied the bulk of the visiting students‘ time, they have had opportunities to play sports and Appel even spent a few days skiing in the United States. In the future Shannon hopes to "dilute" the exchange students‘ acaâ€" demic program, so they are able to spend more time experiencing the country and its culture â€" "That‘s the catch 22 of the program." These students are chosen because of their academic ability â€" they‘ve already proven themselves, said Shannon. Being at Appleby, students have been removed somewhat from the ‘real‘ world and have not witnessed the "economic stress in the system," said Rosenberg. Super savings! 4 days only! Exclusive offer!
