Garage sales are full of hidden treasures By KATY CLARK Special to the Beaver ~~% ach Saturday morning as * the sun rises, dozens of ; Oakville families particiâ€" pate in an unusual but common ritâ€" ual. They haul all their old and discarded belongings out on to their driveways and offer them for sale. Over the next few hours their castoffs become someone else‘s treasures. Beneficial and fun for both vendors and customers, garage sales in Oakville have been flourâ€" ishing since they first became popâ€" ular 15 years ago. This year, more households than, ever are hosting garage sales. Eileen Mackie could be described as a garage sale junkie. Every weekend she faithfully attends all the sales that are held in Oakville â€" often as many as 30 in a day. "I start at 7 a.m. and go home at 4 p.m.," said Mackie. "I take my paper and do all the east side (of Oakville) first, then the rest of the afternoon I do the west." "I don‘t come come out looking for anything, because I have enough of my own," said Mackie. Nevertheless, the selfâ€"confessed garage sales addict admits some of the deals are too good to pass up and she often spends $100 a weekâ€" end. s Like Mackie, Elizabeth Bremner is also a garage sale junkie.
