If you should travel through France and ask for a glass of wine, not by name but by color perhaps, chances are that one would get a Vin de Pays from the Languedoc and Roussillon area. Yet, if one should look for such a wine on a vintage chart, in order to pick the best year, one would seldom even find mention of it, in spite of, this being the most productive region of France â€" turning out vast quantities of wine. As the major tablewine producer of France, Languedoc and Roussillon don‘t need a vintage chart, their wines are never great and never poor. They are from year to year very consistent in quality and provide us with good, wellâ€"made everyday drinking wines, both red and white, with the odd rose among them. Downâ€"toâ€"earth drinking wines The soil is rich; the grapes are large and distinctive in taste, yet in spite of all the large quantities produced, the wines from this most southerly region of France, are wines which appeal to most of us, because they are made for us. If I should travel through Bordeaux, I will be served a wine that will taste like a Bordeaux â€" likewise the Burgundy and Alsatian wines among many others. There is no comâ€" promise and whether I like their wines depends on my tastes. Perhaps, they are right; after all, a wine from those and other regions must be typical and should not take my preferences into account. But what do you do when you produce the vast amounts of wine as the Languedoc, and must sell such wines in an everâ€"increasing sea of unsold wine worldwide? Of course, you produce a wine that is suited to the consumers‘ liking. This is where the recion excels. When I had lunch recently with Robert Skalli, the producer of Fortant de France from Languedoc and Roussillon, he was most concerned that I like his wines. Indeed, not once did he tell me, as so many do, what his wine should taste like, but rather he concerned himself in detail as to the likes and tastes of the consumers in Canada. I even liked his Chardonnay, and I appreciated his down to earth and everyday good drinking wines much more than a wine from other regions which is served to me by a winemakâ€" er who tells me what a wine should taste like and what pleasure I must find drinking it. Perhaps, in the end, it is simply marketing, catering to the consumers. To me though, creating wines which are good and still typical and, most of all, produced in a style that suits the consumer, is an indication of a wine which I can buy and drink time after time. There are days when I simply would like a glass of good dinner wine without taxing my tastebuds or for that matter, my pocket book. There are, presently, four Fortant de France wines listed in Ontario: Fortant Sauvignon Blanc, listed under CSPC 273325 for $7.30; Fortant Chardonnay, CSPC 256560 for $8.70; Fortant Cabernet Sauvignon, CSPC 218123 for $7.30 and Fortant Merlot, listed under CSPC 293969 for about $6.10.
